Course Description
This is an intensive course which focuses on developing your knowledge of Built Environment issues within a global context. The learning experiences in this course will enable you to contextualise the nature of Australian Built Environment businesses practices within global Built Environment contexts. This includes through your participation in a study tour. Whereby you will visit an international region to provide your first hand insight into global business management practices.
You will gain first-hand experience of a range of built environment practices through visiting different industry organisations operating within a contractual framework. You will critically examine industry projects with a focus on factors influencing time, cost and quality parameters together with approaches adopted to meet the challenges of labor, materials, and machinery, health and safety and management practices.
All participants in the study tour must enrol in this course. Please note that course enrolment fees do not include tour costs. Refer to the Course Coordinator for details of your preferred tour including itinerary; travel and accommodation costs; tour costs and deadlines.
Prior to the departure of each tour there will be a series of preparatory meetings and administrative tasks. Your full participation is expected in these activities.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Discuss the complexity of, and interrelationships between professionals engaged within built environment sectors.
- Evaluate how global built environment practices contribute to the sustainability of project cycles in terms of design, construction, management, handover and disposal.
- Critically evaluate the range of professional practices offered by global built environment industries and how these practices may influence career development
- Critically contrast global and AUS built environment practices and discuss the importance of these distinctions
Overview of Learning Activities
The learning activities in this course are designed to enable you to apply your developing knowledge and skills and include workshops, practical study, site visits and web administered learning materials.
The study tour is conducted as an intensive 5 – 7 day study period. You will be guided in your learning through readings, classes, construction site visits, workshops with industry representatives and academics and your own exploration of particular technical and economic aspects of the cities/regions you visit. You will work with your peers in groups as well as undertake your own independent learning.
You will also engage in face to face classes and on line material prior to the study tour. These will include discussion of readings as well as confirmation of the itinerary and suggested sites for group and individual investigation.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.
While on tour you can expect to access lectures at industry sites, tours of construction sites and presentations from industry.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of:
Task 1: Individual work: Under-take research and reflection/application of the knowledge already gained from studies to date to develop an understanding of how the construction industry operates in different regions. 40% weighting. CLO 1, 2 ,3 & 4
Task 2: Individual Journal: Reflect on knowledge and skill development. 30% weighting. CLO 1, 2 ,3 & 4
Task 3: Individual work: Reflective narrative that explores how the learning experience has informed and shaped new knowledge and understanding of the global construction industry. 30% weighting. CLO 1, 2 ,3 & 4
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
