Course Description

This course provides an up to date, accessible, and critical introduction to coaching theory and research for students interested in coaching children and youth. You will examine key topics such as: fundamental coaching skills; motivating children and young athletes; coaching philosophies and models; children and youths’ physical and psychosocial development. You will also investigate safeguarding, child protection issues and coaching ethics; talent identification and high performance coaching; children and young athlete’s health; and reflective practice in sports coaching. The course helps you to interweave theory, research and the puzzling challenges of practice that coaches encounter in their everyday work.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Your learning in this course is focused on development of the following program level capabilities:

  • Determine and apply the specialist knowledge and professional skills required to creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgment and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on complex theories and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in education
  • Professionally communicate with specialist and non-specialist audiences, as producers and consumers of knowledge, about philosophical and pedagogical propositions, processes and outcomes
  • Engage with complex bodies of knowledge and multiple professional skills in order to contribute to your professional identity and career within contemporary contexts


At the conclusion of this course you will be assessed on the following learning outcomes:

  • Examine and reflect on the contemporary issues of coaching children and young athletes
  • Critically discuss and analyse coaching philosophies and models
  • Critically analyse coaching practices in terms of supporting learning
  • Plan supported responses linking the scholarly work with the coach’s practice.

You will participate in a range of face-to-face and online learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and online discussion.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. There will be a required text for the course and you will be provided with a list of scholarly journals in the field of physical education. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes.

Assessment task 1: Review/Conceptual Article (2000 words) 50%
You will produce a review or conceptual article on a contemporary issue(s) of coaching children and/or young athletes
Learning Outcomes 1 and 4

Assessment task 2: Essay (2000 words) 50%
Essay about a coaching philosophy/model that links with practice and includes examples of planned responses.
