Course Description

This course is an introduction to the visual arts, media and culture in 21st century education. You will encounter practical and theoretical components of learning about visual arts, media and culture, and how to apply the acquired disciplinary knowledge, understanding and skills to pedagogy and curriculum design in visual arts and media education. The development of your visual literacy will be promoted and critical, imaginative and reflective learning and teaching approaches will scaffold the development of your creative skills. The course models cross-cultural, personal and interpersonal learning.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Your learning in this course is focused on development of the following program level capabilities:

  • Determine and apply the specialist knowledge and professional skills required to creatively solve problems, demonstrating expert judgment and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on complex theories and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in education
  • Professionally communicate with specialist and non-specialist audiences, as producers and consumers of knowledge, about philosophical and pedagogical propositions, processes and outcomes
  • Engage with complex bodies of knowledge and multiple professional skills in order to contribute to your professional identity and career within contemporary contexts


At the conclusion of this course you will be assessed on the following learning outcomes:

  • Critically analyse visual imagery and text in traditional and digital literacy sources;
  • Reflect upon and critique the work of renowned artists from past cultural contexts;
  • Critique the work of significant creative artists in world cultures of the 21st century, including Australian indigenous artists and artists of the Asia Pacific region;
  • Apply knowledge of pedagogy and curriculum design in visual arts, media and culture to 21st century education;
  • Produce appropriate learning/teaching resources.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities involve the individual and collaborative exploration of arts practice, media and techniques. You will use frameworks to investigate topics such as visual language, contemporary art and media in world cultures and the arts as material and cultural capital. You will learn to apply discipline based knowledge in the visual arts to art education pedagogy and curriculum design by investigating contemporary literature in arts education. You will have an opportunity to explore conceptual and technical skills, visual arts based knowledge and aesthetic discrimination through classroom demonstrations and your own artistic practice, as you develop artwork suitable for classroom resources. You may wish to extend the traditional boundaries of visual art by integrating information communication technologies with the creative and/or presentation aspects of your work.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes. Assessment in the course will be both theoretical and practical in nature. A range of formative and summative assessment types will be incorporated into the course (for example, visual arts resource portfolio, reflection and research based assessment). Assessment will include:

Assessment Task 1: Project proposal (800 words equivalent) 20%
You will submit a Visual Arts/ Media project proposal which outlines what you intend to produce in your Assessment Task 2: Project. You will apply specialist discipline based knowledge and creative imagination in designing your project.  You will also demonstrate knowledge of arts pedagogy and curriculum design.

Assessment Task 2: Visual Arts Project (2000 words equivalent) 50%
You are to prepare a creative project based on your proposal. Your project will include evidence of creative problem solving, aesthetic discrimination and high quality skill development, arts pedagogy and curriculum design, relative to your initial project proposal through to the completion of the task.

Assessment Task 3: Accompanying folio (1200 words equivalent) 30%
You are to include in an accompanying folio of your exploratory investigations, a critique of the work of selected significant creative artists in world cultures of the 21st century, including Australian indigenous artists and artists of the Asia Pacific region who have influenced your creative project.
