Course Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to fundamental biological concepts and skills required for further study leading tertiary levels in the fields of biology, biotechnology, biomedical science, applied science and health science. You will gain an understanding of organisms and their relationships with their environments and you will also gain a firm foundation in analytical processes and scientific methodology.

Course learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Design, conduct, analyse and report on fundamental investigations related to cellular structure and biochemical processes.
- Apply microscopic skills, biological techniques and technologies in practical activities.
- Describe various human body systems and explain their functions.
- Relate technology used today to biological knowledge.

Overview of Learning Activities
This course includes a combination of lectures and tutorials as well as an equivalent amount of time spent in self-study completing exercises and laboratory reports outside of scheduled classes. Your learning activities will include active participation in practical activities, group discussions, worksheet activities, answering given questions, answering past exam papers, study tour activities etc.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment will include:
- Task 1: Research report: (25%) CLO1, CLO2, CLO4
- Task 2: Practical Activities (25%) CLO1, CLO2, CLO3
- Task 3: Quizzes (10%) CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4
- Task 4: Examination (40%) CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4
