Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to the chemical knowledge and laboratory skills and procedures required for further study, leading to higher education programs in applied science, biomedical science and engineering. You will learn a combination of theoretical and practical (hands-on) science. You will explore the composition, structure and behaviour of matter and you will gain a strong foundation in quantifying atoms and compounds. Your learning will be supported by experimentation. You will develop the critical and analytical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to analyse and discuss different chemical phenomena. You will also gain valuable broader skills such as independent learning and teamwork.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the arrangement of elements in the Periodic Table to explain the trends in properties of elements.
  2. Apply the mole concept to calculate various amounts of chemicals.
  3. Use models of structure and bonding to explain the chemical and physical properties of a range of chemicals.
  4. Write balanced equations and apply these to qualitative and quantitative investigations of chemical reactions.
  5. Identify the range of techniques available for chemical analyses and evaluate their suitability for a particular analysis of a substance under investigation.
  6. Analyse first and second hand experimental data for variability and error.

The main learning activities for this course include a combination of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work. You will be required to actively participate in all aspects of learning including note taking during scheduled classes, responding to questions both verbally and in writing, working individually and in a group to complete worksheets and other activities.
