Course Description

This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to take a work of public art from concept and design through to production and installation.
Students will gain knowledge and experience in developing Public Art projects in real environments by drawing together both artistic and practical skills. Students will achieve knowledge in
• Concept development
• Site analysis
• Detailed design
• Project implementation

Learning Outcomes

1. Undertake research to uncover practices in the production of public art
2. Demonstrate skills to work collaboratively in a cross-cultural project
3. Apply problem solving strategies to evaluate a project
4. Produce installations (real or simulated) that explore the nature and complexity of site
5. Plan and implement a public art intervention
6. Create a professional portfolio to publication standard

Overview of Assessment

1. A 10 minute documentary presentation and project document book based on own practice and participation in the 3 week intensive workshop
2. A series of projects and accompanying visual diaries
3. Portfolio of work – studies, projects and workshop outcomes developed throughout the year as class projects

Students already working in the field of public art have the opportunity to negotiate projects for assessment in the context of Work Integrated Learning.

The five courses that comprise the Graduate Certificate in Public Art are delivered and assessed via the work practices and projects undertaken during the program. The courses are delivered and assessed in an integrated form as part of the practice of a developing public artist
