Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work effectively with young people in specific communities, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, schools, rural and remote communities and other specific community settings. It includes the use of individual, group and community development processes to address issues of concern to young people in those communities. This unit applies to youth work in the context of diverse groups of young people and communities.

1.1 Identify the historical, social, political, economic and environmental factors that impact on the community

1.5 Identify the key external stakeholders of the community

You will be involved in learning activities in a series of 1 day long workshops. Activities will include group discussions, critique of reading material and self-reflection exercises.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is based on a written report that demonstrates how you have applied the principles of cultural diversity and cultural competence in your day to day practice.


Assessment Tasks

For this course you will be required to read a DHS publication entitled ‘Cultural Diversity Guide’ that seeks to provide leadership and guidance on cultural diversity matters in Victoria. You will then identify a client from a specific community, including ATSI people, and then describe how you applied the principles of cultural diversity and cultural competence (as specified by this publication) in your day to day practice when working with the young person.
