Course Description

This course describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to connect to the internet, securely send and receive emails, search the internet using web browsers and interact securely and in a socially responsible manner with a range of different internet sites.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Connect to the internet through the existing internet connection and confirm functionality

1.2 Open an internet browser and set a home page of personal choice by setting internet options

1.3 Ensure internet browser software security

1.4 Adjust the display of the internet browser to suit personal requirements

1.5 Modify toolbar to meet user and internet browser needs

1.6 Access a particular website, note privacy and other conditions of use and retrieve data

1.7 Use socially responsible behaviour when sharing information on the internet

1.8 Enter uniform resource locator (URL) in address line of internet browser

3.2 Open an internet application and locate and access a search engine on the internet and define search expressions based on the data required

3.3 Enter appropriate key words into the search engine to locate the desired information

3.4 Refine a search depending on outcomes of the original search

3.5 Save search expression results and present them in a report according to the information requirements

3.6 Create a bookmark within the internet browser or a link for the required web page for the key results

3.7 Save the key results in a bookmark folder

3.8 Modify the internet browser options for printing and print a web page

3.9 Close the internet browser

Details of Learning Activities

Computers touch our lives in many different ways. Having some basic skills to operate a computer and search the internet are valuable both for employment opportunities, social connections and everyday transactions. Computer knowledge and use of the internet is expected of us for such things as Internet banking, booking tickets, downloading forms, applying for jobs. Many jobs will require some knowledge of computer skills and many opportunities for employment seeking are available on the internet only.

The following themes will be explored:
• use of PC or digital device with internet
• search engines currently used in industry
• organisational policies on internet usage


Teaching Schedule

You will be provided with a comprehensive workshop schedule at your first class in February that will highlight the different days of the week and the classes that are scheduled for this course.

Overview of Assessment

A range of assessment methods will be used to assess your practical skills and knowledge. These include for this course:

■direct observation of you accessing the internet, using email, and searching and interacting with consumer sites using advanced search features
■direct observation of you undertaking online interactions
■review of your search results, including assessment of the accuracy, currency and reliability of the site and information located.

To gain competency in this course, you are required to participate in and complete activities/tasks that are given during class time. Occasionally you will be asked to complete an unfinished project as homework or collect information in your own time to be used in class.
