Course Description

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to alter existing services to a voice or data cable system within a client's premises and use formal documentation procedures.

It applies to technical staff who alter services to existing cable systems for indoor and outdoor installation within domestic, commercial or industrial installations of communications applications including digital and analog, telephony, data, video, digital broadcasting, computer networks, local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN) and multimedia.

1.1 Arrange access to site according to client instructions and required procedures
1.2 Survey site to determine system alteration requirements to existing cable system
1.3 Inform appropriate personnel of identified hazards on worksite
1.4 Organise equipment and materials to meet required industry standards and ensure compatibility with existing system

2.1 Follow work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements for given work and according to industry standards

2.2 Alter cabling system, conforming to client system specifications and according to industry standards and relevant legislation, codes, regulations and standards

3.1 Confirm compatibility of alterations with existing cabling systems and client equipment

3.2 Test new work in isolation and when integrated with existing cabling systems and client equipment

3.3 Rectify any cabling faults or escalate client equipment faults to authorised person

4. Complete records and clean up site

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Update plans and documents to show revised cabling systems accurately and clearly, or create new plans as appropriate

4.2 Remove installation waste and debris from worksite and dispose of according to environmental requirements to maintain safe worksite conditions

4.3 Reinstate site according to client and company requirements

4.4 Complete requisite Telecommunications Advice Form and sign off with client to record satisfaction

Details of Learning Activities

This course is delivered in a cluster (Terminate Testing) in conjunction with ICTCBL203 Terminate metallic conductor customer cable (EEET7366C)

Students will participate in a variety of teaching methods including: lectures, tutorials,practicals, class discussion and work on assignment.


Teaching Schedule

Week 1. Introduction
Week 2. Prepare for given work according to relevant legislation, codes, regulations and standards
Week 3. Arrange access to the site according to required procedure
Week 4. Prepare to install telecommunications earthing system
Week 5. The telecommunications reference conductor
Week 6. Calculate earthing requirements using relevant cable characteristics
Week 7. Calculate the upper and lower limits of resistance for cable system earths
Week 8. Installing a TRC
Week 9. TRC installation and testing requirements practical
Week 10. Establish location of earthing applications, minimising the risks posed by contact with remote power feeding services
Week 11. Select route to minimise interference to system performance and according to safe working practices
Week 12. Select earthing materials to comply with relevant industry standards
Week 13. Install and secure earth cable
Week 14. Maintain cable separations to meet performance requirements of application environment
Week 15. Check earth cable insulation is undamaged to ensure integrity of earth provided
Week 16. Isolate protective and functional earths at all times to ensure operation according to industry standards
Week 17. Install and secure cable following occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental requirements
Week 18. Install and secure cable meeting manufacturer’s specifications and industry standards practical
Week 19. Terminate and test earth cable installation
Week 20. Terminate earth with connectors recommended by manufacturer and according to industry standards
Week 21. Maintain earth continuity at all times to ensure safe and reliable system operation
Week 22. Maintain correct interface requirements with electrical systems according to industry standards

Week 24. Test the earthing system according to manufacturer’s specifications in a safe manner
Week 25. Rectify earth system faults, where required, prior to re-testing
Week 26. The telex functional earth

Week 30. Complete documentation, including test records
