Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to align and sew components using a range of machines and sewing operation techniques.

1. Prepare Components

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Work bundle is received and checked, and any follow-up action is determined.
1.2 Components are laid out in sequence.

2. Prepare workstation

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Workbench and seating are set up according to OH&S practices.
2.2 Machines are cleaned.
2.3 Records are maintained.
2.4 Machines are set up and adjusted according to specifications for work.
2.5 Needles, attachments and parts are checked and worn needles and parts
are identified and reported or replaced, according to manufacturer instructions.

3. Identify poor machine performance

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Performance of machine is regularly checked for signs of faulty operation, including evidence from inspection of finished pieces.
3.2 Required action taken to address poor performance

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Components are sewn according to requirements for operations.
4.2 Components are sewn according to quality standards.
4.3 Components are sewn according to requirements for speed of work.
4.4 Machine speed and work handling are controlled for type of operations,
fabrics and product type.
4.5 OH&S practices are followed in operation of machine.
4.6 Action is taken according to OH&S practices to prevent accidents and to eliminate risks to personal safety.

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Sewn components are inspected, any faults identified and appropriate action taken and finished pieces are checked against quality standards.
5.2 Results of inspection of finished components are recorded.
5.3 Action taken to either reject or correct faulty components is recorded.
5.4 Preventative action taken to avoid recurrence of defective pieces is recorded.
5.5 Production records or packing slips are completed.
5.6 Completed work is directed to next operation or packing section.

Teaching Schedule

Weeks 1-3: Introduction to Production area and machinery.
Weeks 2-8: Straight Sewing Machine Activities.
Weeks 3-8: Overlock Machine Activities.
Weeks 6-8: Simple garment construction.
Weeks 9-17: Sampler construction activities
Weeks 11-13: Intermediate garment construction and sewing activities
Weeks 14-17: Complex garment construction and sewing activities.

Overview of Assessment

Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
1. Follow correct Occupational Health and Safety procedures by setting up and doing work according to safety standards
2. Thread, adjust, test and safely operate at least 4 different machine types and an overlock machine to produce test and specified work-pieces according to specifications and quality standards
3. Efficiently position and construct garment pieces according to given samples and quality standards.
4. Explain how various sewing processes could de used for different situations (by means of oral or written test and practical activities).
5. Investigate and report on the causes of faults by completing appropriate report work


Assessment Tasks

Authentication of work.
Please note: Tasks that have not been authenticated during class as your own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary.
ASSESSMENT:
In class activities and completed sampler file……20%
Garment 1: 40% …shirt
Garment 2: 40% …skirt
