Learning Outcomes
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to use a range of industrial sewing sewing machines to align and sew work pieces.
Details of Learning Activities
Students will participate in the following:
1. Trainer assisted use of self-paced learning materials.
2. Observation tasks.
3. Basic machine set-up.
4. Assembly tasks, basic sewing operations, simple garment construction.
5. Occupational health and safety.
6. Quality checks.

Teaching Schedule
Weeks 1-3: Introduction to Production area and machinery.
Weeks 2-8: Straight Sewing Machine Activities.
Weeks 3-8: Overlock Machine Activities.
Weeks 6-8: Simple garment construction.
Weeks 9-17: Sampler construction activities
Weeks 11-13: Intermediate garment construction and sewing activities
Weeks 14-17: Complex garment construction and sewing activities.

Overview of Assessment
Tasks that have not been authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary to demonstrate that you can:
1. Follow correct Occupational Health and Safety procedures by setting up and doing work according to safety standards
2. Thread, adjust, test and safely operate at least 4 different machine types and an overlock machine to produce test and specified work-pieces according to specifications and quality standards
4. Explain how various sewing machines could de used for different situations (by means of oral or written test and practical activities).
5. Investigate and report on the causes of faults by completing appropriate report work
