Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for a dental assistant to prepare the dental surgery, including preparation of necessary equipment, instruments and materials, for oral health care procedures and to assist the operator during the delivery of these procedures.
All procedures are carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, State/Territory legislative requirements and organisational policy.

1. Prepare the dental surgery for oral health care procedures

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Make accessible in the clean zone of the surgery the client’s necessary charts and records.
1.2 Identify correctly the planned procedure.
1.3 Anticipate and select correctly the equipment, instruments materials and medicaments for the planned procedure and arrange them in their likely order of use.
1.3 Give personal protective equipment to the client and members of the dental team.
1.4 Support aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of infection

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Select and prepare the correct syringe, cartridge and needle for local anaesthesia as directed by the operator.
3.2 Check the expiry dates for the local anaesthetic cartridge prior to use.
3.3 Transfer the unused local anaesthetic syringe to the operator in accordance with infection control guidelines for the transfer of sharps between health care workers.

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Select and transfer to the operator the instruments, equipment, materials and medicaments required for the oral health care procedure.
4.2 Assist the operator to maintain a clear field of vision.
4.3 Clear the mouth of oral fluids and debris and control moisture.
4.4 Retract and protect the client’s soft tissues using instruments and materials appropriate to the procedure.
4.5 Monitor the client’s well-being, identify any complications and take the necessary actions without delay to support the client and the operator.
4.6 Prepare the correct materials and medicaments using the correct technique, to the correct consistency and quantity required and within the designated timelines as directed by the operator.
4.7 Select additional instruments and materials as required without contaminating sterile stock.
4.8 Record the treatment given, materials used and drugs/medicaments prescribed as directed by the operator.
4.9 Complete all tasks within the designated timelines in accordance with operator instructions.
4.10 Give prescribed post-operative written instructions to the client/carer where appropriate.

5.1 Check that instrument sharpness conforms to operator specifications and advise of any deficiency.
5.2 Maintain equipment in good working order.
5.3 Store equipment and instruments correctly.
5.4 Report faults in equipment or instruments promptly to the operator.
5.5 Maintenance records are legible and accurate.
5.6 Arrange for the servicing of instruments and equipment at intervals recommended by the manufacturer or as recommended.

Assessment Tasks

HLTDA303B Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures

Introduction to dentistry /dental terminology test , pass mark 70%,  (Assessment date: Day 1/ Block 2.  If NYC "Not yet competent" result is achieved, student is required to resubmit the learning guide within 2 weeks from the day they have been notified of the result. An appointment with the lead teacher is to be orginised by student to undertake a supplementary test)
 

Structures of the oral cavity written task , pass mark 90% (Task due: 2 weeks after Block 2. If NYC "Not yet competent" result is achieved, student is required to resubmit the task within 2 weeks from the day they have been notified of the result)


Notation test , pass mark 90% ( Assessment date: Day 5/ Block 3. If NYC "Not yet competent" result is achieved, student is required to contact a lead teacher to discuss and arrange a supplementary test. Further work experience is required prior to the supplemantary test)

Instrument portfolio , pass mark 90% (Due date: Day 1/ Block 3. If NYC "Not yet competent" result is achieved, student will be required to gain further work experience and resubmit improved task within 2 weeks from the date they have been advised of the result)


Oral Health Care procedures combined learning guide ( Due date: Day 1/ Block 4. This is a pre-requisite for attendance to HLTDA303B Written Assessment scheduled for Day 4/ Block 4. )

Workplace assessment (on the job observation by RMIT Assessor of student in their workplace demonstrating application and underpinning knowledge in Oral Health Care procedures in health work as per the 6 Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTDA303B). This assessment must be undertaken post block 4 attendance but prior to student RMIT end enrolment date.
 

An NYC "Not yet competent" result at the Workplace Assessment will be managed directly by the Program Coordinator. The student will be provided with an "Action Plan" that has been individually customised to the student’s learning outcomes. This may include, but is not limited to the provision of supporting written evidence by the student following further research, third party evidence obtained from the employer and/or re-enrolment in Unit HLTDA303B.

Special Consideration must be lodged prior to or within 48 hours of the scheduled assessment time or assessment submission date.

The application for Special Consideration is NOT granted automatically on application.
 


Students are required to support the learning outcomes for Unit HLTDA303B with work based experience and further self managed research to support positive outcomes in this Unit.

A student may be required to seek further clinical experience outside their place of employment in order to achieve the required Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTDA303B.

To undertake practical clinical evaluation and /or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

In appropriate clinical attire(no jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) clinical footwear

Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
No nail varnish to be worn. The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing
 

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake clinical evaluation or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.
