Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a health setting with patients, clients, staff, visitors, suppliers and others to meet established work requirements.

Session 1: 4 hours

Facilitator led Study and Learning online (including time management and LLN) via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion.
Facilitator led IT Induction via Power Point presentation and computer based activity.
Facilitator led Legal and Ethical (including Workplace Ethics and Legal Issues and Maintain professional work practices) via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion.

Session: 3 hours

Facilitator led Communicating and working in the dental surgery via Power Point Presentation, classroom discussion, individual & small group activity and role play.

Communicate effectively (Discussion of Power Point Presentation on communicate and work effectively in a health setting). Students are placed in small groups and are given workplace scenarios from which they are to role-plays/or mind map an management plan (using positive and effective communication skills).


Practice high standards of personal hygiene (Power Point Presentation and discussion on practice high standards of personal hygiene.
Promote a positive approach to health (Power Point Presentation and discussion on promoting a positive approach to health for clients and colleagues).
Work effectively within the health care system (Power Point Presentation and discussion on working effectively within the health care system, including the dental team, the dental industry (private and public dentistry), and the current dental health issues

topics include:

Communicate effectively (Discussion of Power Point Presentation on communicate and work effectively in a health setting). Students are placed in small groups and are given workplace scenarios from which they are to role-play/or develop a mind map management plan using positive and effective communication skills. Topics discussed include maintaining patient confidentiality
Practice high standards of personal hygiene (Power Point Presentation and discussion on practice high standards of personal hygiene. Teacher led class discussion as to what this means to a health care worker and how this impacts on communication and perception of the dental practice.
Promote a positive approach to health (Power Point Presentation and discussion on promoting a positive approach to health for clients and colleagues). Teacher led discussion on being a heathy role model for patients and having an understanding and knowledge about dental care/health and how oral health impacts on general health. A appreciation of an awareness of available resources for patients to increase their own health literacy.
DVD shown on special needs patients/communication skills and class discussion post DVD.
Work effectively within the health care system (Power Point Presentation and discussion on working effectively within the health care system, including the dental team, the dental industry (private and public dentistry), and the current dental health issues. Referral of patients to other services/practitioners/specialist services by the Dental Operator.
Reflection of class


Session 3:

Participation and engagement in class work. Students gain information of communicating and working as an efficient dental assistant with patients who are medically compromised during peer case study oral presentations.

 

Session 4:

Facilitator led Professional Development via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion including the following topics: career pathways-certificate IV dental assisting, advanced diploma of hygiene, industry career options, how to develop and write a CV and professional interview skills

Overview of Assessment

A variety of assessments are incorporated in this unit of competency including:
• Observation in the work place
• Evidence of essential knowledge and understanding may be provided by: traditional or on line (computer-based) assessment or written assignments/projects
• Case study and scenario as a basis for discussion of issues and strategies to contribute to best practice
• Questioning
• Staff and/or client feedback
• Supporting statement of supervisor
• Authenticated evidence of relevant work experience and/or formal/informal learning
• Role play simulation

Application for extension of time for submission of work (where the assessment tasks will be submitted within seven days)


To achieve a CA (competency achieved) result in unit HLTHIR301B a student MUST complete ALL of the assessment tasks as listed below and achieve a PX for each of the assessment tasks.

  • Completion of the Legal and Ethical written assessment by due date
  • Complete of the Case study oral presentation/written report/third party evidence document, (written report and oral presentation of a medically compromised patient) with a fully completed and signed HLTHIR301B cover sheet must be submitted with the written assessment. Refer to the Student Handbook for RMIT policies and protocol for submission of task.
  • Third party evidence completed by the student and workplace supervisor indicating the clinical experience that has occurred and workplace supervisor to record relevant comments about their observation of the student is included in the written assessment
  • Completion of the Professional Development assessment (including a Professional development plan which must be signed by Workplace supervisor. Student is required to write cover letter for application into a Certificate IV dental assisting program and write a current CV as per assessment criteria)


A NYC (Not Yet Competent) result for the three written assessments is managed as follows-
The resulted coversheet and assessment task will be returned to the student including written feedback on areas that require improvement and consolidation of knowledge/underpinning skills for resubmission The student will have two weeks to submit the resubmission from the date of receiving the resubmission.

The student will submit the original marked assessment (including original marked coversheet) and the resubmission answers that have been researched. The student with a resubmission is strongly advised to contact the lead teacher of the relevant element/assessment task to clarify any aspects of the resubmission or arrange for a private tutorial.

Students will be provided with only ONE opportunity for reassessment to achieve a result of  PX (pass) for the relevant assessment task.


Please note: Failure to undertake the above mentioned to achieve a PX result for the three assessments may result in a student being deemed NYC for Unit HLTHIR301B requiring result re-enrolment in the unit incurring fees which may include but is not limited to a return to class work and completion of any assessment and or tasks relevant to the program at the time of the re-enrolment.


Assessment Matrix

1. Legal and Ethical assessment task: issued block 1, day 4. Due date for submission 2 weeks post block 1 attendance.


2. Case study oral presentation, written report & third party evidence document assessment task: issued block 1,day 4.  Due date for submission block 4,day 4.

3. Professional Development assessment task: issued block 4, day 5. Due date for submission 2 weeks post block 4 attendance
 

ALL 3 assessment tasks must be completed and deemed PX - pass result to achieve a CA competency achieved result for Unit HLTHIR301B

Other Information

This unit of competency is delivered against industry standards and is designed to support students in developing their personal skills in communication to enhance their employment experience and their ability to establish client centered approach to dental/health care.

Students are encouraged to access a variety of resources including their colleagues in health work to support the development of effective communication skills and application of these in the workplace. This will assist in providing client centered health care and the delivery of "best practice".
