Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for workers in the health care setting to comply with infection control policies and procedures. All procedures must be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards for maintaining infection control and the policies and procedures of the health care establishment.
This unit acknowledges the importance of complying with an effective infection control strategy that ensures client safety, maintains personal protection and prevents the transmission of infections from person to person within the health care environment.
All tasks must be carried out in accordance with State or Territory legislative requirements that affect work practices of the health care establishment and/or health care worker.

7.2 Remove all dust, dirt and physical debris from work surfaces
7.3 Clean all work surfaces with a neutral detergent and warm water solution before and after each session or when visible soiled
7.4 Decontaminate equipment requiring special processing in accordance with quality management systems to ensure full compliance with cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation protocols

It is important to note that unit HLTIN301C is a prerequisite unit for Units HLTIN302B, HLTDA303C, HLTDA304C,HLTDA306C

 

Facilitator led classroom based lecture program (microbiology & clinical infection control in dental practice)

Demonstration and class discussion on PPE (personal protective equipment placement and removal)

Facilitator led practical clinical demonstration & simulation activity in barrier placement, non-touch retrieval techniques,environmental cleaning,HVE placement for efficient aerosol management , hand management for maintenance of intact skin and nail cuticles, hand hygiene - washing & application/use of hand sanitizer products in health work

Peer based evaluation activity using UV lights for demonstration of effective hand washing technique

Practical clinical practise, peer evaluation/feedback session in barrier placement and removal, efficient use of HVE (high velocity evacuation) for minimisation of aerosol, practise in PPE placement and removal, practise in hand washing technique

Self managed research to support completion of Learning Guide and consolidation of underpinning knowledge

Block 1,Day 1 - 5 hour Facilitator led classroom based lecture program (microbiology & clinical infection control in dental practice)


Block1, Day 2 - 2 hour Facilitator led, classroom based lecture program (microbiology & clinical infection control in dental practice)


45 minute Facilitator led demonstration and class discussion on each individual item of PPE (personal protective equipment placement, removal & importance of each piece of equipment)

2 hour practical clinical demonstration & simulation in barrier placement, non-touch retrieval techniques,environmental cleaning,HVE placement for effective aerosol management

3 hours practical activities including handwashing & hand hygiene demonstration and student participation in activity using UV light system, clinical practise in barrier placement and removal technique, clinical practise in PPE placement and removal, individual written task noting 3 personal improvements student can initiate in own infection control protocols in their how these can be effectively implemented in their workplace

Between block 1 and block 2 attendance -4 hours self managed research using prescribed and recommended texts to support completion of Learning Guide and consolidation of underpinning knowledge to support positive outcomes on the written assessment and workplace assessment for this unit of competency. A Learning Guide and Third Party Evidence Document are available to all students enrolled in this unit of competency for access via RMIT Blackboard. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the learning guide as it will support the development of skills and knowledge in this unit and will assist the student with the associated written and workplace assessment. The Third Party Evidence Document has been designed for workplace implementation to allow a student to gain constructive feedback from Supervisors/mentors as to their application and development of skills and knowledge in infection control in the workplace. Completion of the Third Party Evidence Document is also strongly encouraged as a self managed learning tool to assist students to assess their indiividual learning and progress to achieve positive outcomes in this unit of competency. The Learning Guide is aligned directly with the desired learning outcomes of this unit of competency and as such will provide students with study direction.



Block 2, Day 2 - individual 1/2 hour clinical evaluation/feedback session on barrier placement and removal, HVE placement and non-touch retrieval methods with RMIT Workplace Assessor to provide both verbal and written feedback to student in areas that require consolidation of skills and knowledge prior to a workplace assessment. Please note this is not an assessment, it is a "hurdle" task to support student learning and experience in the workplace.

45 minute written assessment -(30 multiple choice) questions developed from all 7 Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C  Written assessment Px pass mark = 70%

Post block 4 but prior to end of RMIT enrolment date

Unit HLTIN301C is an integrated part of a 3 hour clinical workplace assessment at the student’s workplace

To undertake practical clinical demonstration class work and evaluation and or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

In appropriate clinical attire(no jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) clinical footwear (this is a compulsory worksafe requirement)
Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
No nail varnish to be worn. The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake clinical evaluation or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake the assessment at a later date.

Workplace Assessment (on the job observation by RMIT Assessor of student in their workplace demonstrating application and underpinning knowledge in infection control policies and procedures in health work as per the 7 Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C). This assessment must be undertaken post block 4 attendance but prior to student RMIT end enrolment date.

A student may be required toseek further clinical experience outside their place of employment in order to achieve the required Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C ie. in dental practice that does not use barriers but employs a wiping technique the student may wish to seek external clinical experience to assist them in gaining the skills and knowledge in this learning outcome as per the Performance Criteria.

Prerequisite for participation in clinical evaluation/feedback session and written assessment block 2, day 2 as follows:

Attendance to block 1, day 1 and day 2 classes and practical clinical sessions (as per individual student RMIT Certificate III Dental Assisting Training Plan). 

Prerequisite for workplace assessment in Unit HLTIN301C post block 4 but prior to end of RMIT enrolment date as follows:
Attendance to all HLTIN301C block 1, day 1 & day 2, classes and block 2, day 2 classes (as per individual student RMIT Certificate III Dental Assisting Training Plan).

Completion of practical clinical evaluation/feedback session block 2, day 2

PX result (above 70% for written assessment block 2, day 2) In the event of the student achieving a NYC "Not Yet Competent’ result, the student will be given ONE opportunity to resit the assessment. Re assessment is at the discretion of the Program Coordinator.
A second NYC grade will result in the student failing the this unit of competency. Re-enrolment incurring fees, a possible return to class work and completion of any assessment tasks relevant at the time of the re-enrolment would be required to complete the unit of competency.

Submission of Third Party Evidence of work based training via sign off by student and workplace supervisor in Unit HLTIN301C as per the listed 7 Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C in the student’s individual Workplace Training Record Book to demonstrate evidence of readiness for assessment. 


CA-Competency Achieved in Unit HLTIN301C - when all of the above listed criteria are met and on successful completion by the student of Unit HLTIN301C workplace assessment in the dental practice in this unit of competency. Student must be deemed competent in 90% of the workplace assessment in HLTIN301C .

An NYC "Not Yet Competent" result at the workplace assessment will be managed directly by the Program Coordinator.

The student will be required to meet with the Program Coordinator via a scheduled appointment, following written and verbal feedback from the RMIT Assessor, the student and the employer (if the student is on a traineeship).
The student will be provided ONE opportunity to resit the assessment in a method to be contextualised and determined by the Program Coordinator with relevance to the feedback provided. A second NYC grade will result in the student failing the unit of competency. 

The student will be required to re-enrol in the unit incurring fees, a possible return to class work and completion of any relevant assessment tasks at the time of the re-enrolment to achieve a competent reuslt for unit HLTIN301C

The application of Infection Control in dental practice by the student must be routine and consistent to support evidence of meeting the 7 Elements/Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C as expressed in the sign off by the student and workplace supervisor in the Student Workplace Training Record Book.

A student may be required to seek further clinical experience outside their place of employment in order to achieve the required Learning Outcomes for Unit HLTIN301C.
