Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for workers in the health care setting to comply with infection control policies and procedures. All procedures must be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards for maintaining infection control and the policies and procedures of the health care establishment.
This unit acknowledges the importance of complying with an effective infection control strategy that ensures client safety, maintains personal protection and prevents the transmission of infections from person to person within the health care environment.
All tasks must be carried out in accordance with State or Territory legislative requirements that affect work practices of the health care establishment and/or health care worker.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Demonstrate the application of standard precautions to prevent the spread of infection in accordance with organisation requirements
1.2 Demonstrate the application of additional precautions when standard precautions alone may not be sufficient to prevent transmission of infection
1.3 Minimise contamination of materials, equipment and instruments by aerosols and splatter

Practical Assessment Block 2 Day 2
Students are to undertake a practical assessment to demonstrate their knowledge and skill in maintaining their own personal hygiene, correct placement and removal of their personal protection equipment and the prevention of transmission of infection.

Students will be assessed in the following:
- Correct handwashing procedures
- Personal protection placement
- Surgery preparation
- Aerosol minimisation
- Barrier placement and removal
- HVE placement
- Clinical waste disposal
- Maintenance of clean environmental surfaces

Workplace Assessment
This workplace assessment is conducted at the students workplace after
Block 4 and prior to the last day of the RMIT enrolment period.
Competency must be achieved or re-enrolment will be required

Assessment Tasks

**Please note prerequisite completion of HLTIN301A Learning Guide and submission of Third Party Evidence Document 2 weeks prior to block 2 attendance is compulsory for student to be eligible to undertake the following assessment tasks:

1. Practical simulated clinical evaluation (one on one with Assessor) in correct handwashing technique, correct placement and removal of PPE, correct placement and removal of barriers on dental unit,use of non-touch retrieval methods, placement of HVE in anterior and posterior of oral cavity for adequate aerosol management. (Hurdle task).

Assessor to provide written feedback on skills demonstrated by student in simulated evaluation to assist student development in infection control and support unit HLTIN301A underpinning knowledge for workplace assessment. 

 

2. Written assessment consisting of 30 multiple choice questions (pass mark is 70%).

**Please note students are required to adhere to the following requirements to participate in the infection control evaluations and assessments: fully covered in leather footwear, appropriate clinical attire (no jeans, exposed midriff, singlet tops), short fingernails, no artificial fingernails or nail polish.
