Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a health
setting with clients, staff, visitors, suppliers and others to meet established work requirements.

This unit applies to work in a range of health settings such as:
      specific community
      community, regional or remote service provider
      department of a large institution or organisation
      specialised service or organisation
      private provider

Details of Learning Activities

Facilitator led PowerPoint Presentation and class discussion on the following:

  • Legal and Ethical issues: with student competing a worksheet which is submitted at the end of the class.
  • Communication with clients & colleagues, professional presentation, professional development, conflict management and team work in dental practice with a scenario based communication activities
  • Self-managed research on patient case study for an oral presentation
  • Oral Presentation to class peers and RMIT assessor
  • Self managed research and completion of oral presentation and on the job work-based training
  • Professional Development: CV writing activity

Teaching Schedule

  • Block 1 day 1: Welcome to RMIT and induction to unit ( 2 hours; 11 am. to 1 pm.)
  • Block 1 day 3:  Indroduction to the unit and class on  Legal and Ethical ( 2 hours; 11 am. to 1 pm.)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Facilitator led class discussion using power point and students complete Legal and Ethical worksheet which is peer reviwed and collected at the end of the class.
  • Block 1 day 4:  IT Induction to RMIT Student Services including study and learning services (1 Hour: 12 pm. to 1 pm.)
    Facilitator led IT activity using PowerPoint and the completion of the IT Webquest which is collected at the end of the class, collated and returned to the students on Block 1 day 5.
     
  • Block 1 day 4: Communicate and work effectively in health  (3 Hours: 2 pm. to 5 pm.)
    Facilitator led class discussion using power point, including small group activities  and class senerios based on the dental practice, the final hour is allocated to accessing myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard) and reviewing the  HLTHIR301C Oral presentation assessment task. 

  • Block 3 day 3: Oral Presentation:  Communicate and work effectively in health (4 Hours: 9 am. to 1 pm.)
    Student present their case studies to student group and RMIT assessor.
  •  Block 4 day 5: Professinal development (3 Hours: 11.30 am. to 3.30 pm.)
    Facilitator led class discussion using power point, including small group computer-based activity. 
  •  5 hours - self managed research and completion of  oral presentation and on the job work-based training

             Total nominal hours = 20

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will include demonstration of underpinning skills and knowledge, assessment activities may include quizzes, role play, oral presentation, and written work.


Assessment Tasks


  • Legal and Ethcial Worksheet completed in class (Element 1): 10% weight.
  • Oral assessment case study presentation using power point (approximately 10 minutes in duration) to RMIT Assessor and class peers) (Element 1-7):  :  70% weight.
  • Submission of signed Third Party Evidence Declaration to support evidence of workbased training and development of skills (Element 1-7): 10% weight.
  • Profesional Development in class activity (Element 7):  : 10% wieght.

             Total weight of assessment = 100%.



 


Assessment Matrix

 

CA competency achieved in Unit HLTHIR301C Communicate and work effectively in health as follows:

• Px (pass) Legal and Ethical Worksheet completed in class (Block 1 day 3); 10% weight. 
• Px (pass) Oral assessment case study presentation using power point (approximately 10 minutes in duration) to RMIT Assessor and class peers (Block 3 day 3); 70% weight.
• Submission of signed Third Party Evidence Declaration to support evidence of work-based training and development of skills(Block 3 Day 3); 10% weight.
• Px (pass) Professional Development in class activity (Block 4 day 5;) 10% weight.

Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in a NYC not yet competent result for unit HLTHIR301C Communicate and work effectively in health.
This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment. This may also result in non-completion of the Certificate III Dental Assisting Program.
Student identification card is required to undertake assessment for this unit.
