Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance

1.1 Identify assess and minimise hazards in the situation that may pose a risk of injury or illness to self and others
1.2 Minimise immediate risk to self and casualty's health and safety by controlling any hazard in accordance with work health and safety requirements
1.3 Assess casualty and identify injuries, illnesses and conditions

2.1 Adopt a communication style to match the casualty’s level of consciousness
2.2 Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
2.3 Respond to the casualty in a culturally aware, sensitive and respectful manner

2.5 Seek consent from casualty prior to applying first aid management
2.6 Provide first aid management in accordance with established first aid principles and procedures
2.7 Seek first aid assistance from others in a timely manner and as appropriate
2.8 Correctly operate first aid equipment for first aid management according to manufacturer/supplier’s instructions and procedures
2.9 Use safe manual handling techniques
2.10 Monitor casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with established first aid principles and procedures

Details of Learning Activities

Facilitator led class discussion using power point: altered and loss of consciousness, anaphylaxis, burns, cardiac arrest, choking & FBAO, envenomation, epilepsy,diabetes ,poisoning, shock, stroke, substance misuse - alcohol & illicit drugs, legal issues, cultural awareness, communication with the casualty and debriefing
Facilitator led demonstration of the following:lateral recovery position, use of "epipen", use of A.E.D., CPR including infant and 2 rescuer CPR, D.R.S.A.B.C.D., bleeding, amputation management of stump and amputated part, asthma,bandaging and first aid management of dental trauma.
Small group activities in lateral recovery position including safe manual handling techniques, D.R.S.A.B.C,A.E.D. use, 2 resuer C.P.R., 1 rescuer C.P.R., "Epipen"use, bandaging techniques
C.P.R. practise and practical assessment

Teaching Schedule

6 hours - day 5, block 1 -

Facilitator led class discussion using power point
Facilitator led demonstration of the following:lateral recovery position, use of "epipen", use of A.E.D., CPR including infant and 2 rescuer CPR, D.R.S.A.B.C.D., bleeding, amputation management of stump and amputated part, asthma.
Small group activities in lateral recovery position, D.R.S.A.B.C, A.E.D. use, 2 resuer C.P.R., 1 rescuer C.P.R., "Epipen"use.

C.P.R. practise and practical assessment

Completion of D.R.S.A.B.C. scenario based written incident report
C.P.R. practical assessment
9 hours - self managed research and completion of compulsory workbook.

3 hours - day 5, block 2-

Facilitator led discussion using power point of first aid management of dental trauma - avulsion, jaw fractures and head injuries
Facilitator led demonstration and practise of bandaging techniques for sprains, fractures and snake bite.
Facilitator led revision using power point and student’s completed workbook
Written assessment (45 minutes)
Total Nominal Hours = 18 hours

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will include demonstration of underpinning skills and knowledge, assessment activities may include quizzes, practical demonstration and written work.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment is in the form of a CPR practical, successfully completed workbook and written test.

C.P.R. practical assessment including written scenario based incident report - 45% weight
Completion of workbook responses and submission by due date unless application for 1 week extension or special consideration has been formally granted - 10% weight
Written assessment - 45% weight
Total assessment weight 100% 
 


Assessment Matrix

Pre-requisite for written assessment is successful completeion PX for CPR practical assessment and submission of fully completed workbook by due date for submission. Please note: the student will not be eligible to undertake the written assessment if the completed workbook responses are not submitted. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.

 

CA competency achieved in Unit HLTFA311A Apply First Aid as follows:

PX (pass) result for C.P.R. practical assessment including scenario based incident report - Day 5 Block 1
Completion of all compulsory workbook responses and submission by due date - 3 weeks after block 1 attendance
PX (pass) result for written assessment with a result of 80% or above - Day 5 Block 2 
Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in a NYC not yet competent result for unit HLTFA311A Apply First Aid. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment. This may also result in non-completion of the Certificate III Dental Assisting Program.

Other Information

This unit of competence is delivered against the A.R.C Guidelines www.arc.guidelines.au Industry standard manikins are used for simulated C.P.R. assessment.

Student identification card is required to undertake assessment for this unit.

Students will be expected to actively engage in the simulated scenario based class work and all practical based activities and assessments to achieve the unit learning outcomes.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Students are required to update the Perform C.P.R. competency training annually to maintain currency of the HLTFA311A Apply First Aid qualification for 3 years from the date of issue.

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:

Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTFA311A. This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. NYC (not yet competent) will be recorded and re enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred. Please note: A second opportunity for assessment will not be granted unless the student has applied for and been granted special consideration as per RMIT assessment policy.
