Course Description
This course deals with the cultural awareness required for effective communication and cooperation with clients of diverse cultures. In this course you will study how you can reflect cultural awareness in your work practice, and how you can accept cultural diversity as a basis for effective work place and professional relationships. You will learn how to communicate effectively with culturally diverse people and how to resolve cross-cultural misunderstandings.

Details of Learning Activities
Learning activities will take place in campus classrooms as well as in simulated workplace rooms that are equipped with equipment and facilities that are used in the Aged Care sector workplaces. You will receive training using current industry practices from trainers who are working in the industry. A range of educational resources are used including case studies, scenarios and practical information materials, audio visual materials, class discussions and practical demonstrations. Practical placement is an important learning activity and you will receive support, guidance and de-briefing from the trainers to maximise your learning in the work environment

Wednesday 24/04/2013 - 09:30 to 16:30 - morning session will be held at the immigration museum
Thursday 25/04/2013 - 09:30 to 16:30

The final assessment will be conducted on Wednesday 1 May.
You will be expected to engage in some homework/research activities throughout the period from 17/42/2013 to 01/05/2013

To support delivery of this Unit you will have access to the RMIT simulated home room which provides industry standard equipment and resources. In addition you will be provided with the latest information on current memos and updates from within the industry.
Overview of Assessment
In this course you will be assessed on the knowledge and skills that you have developed to meet the competency requirements of this course. You will complete assessments to determine your knowledge throughout the course which ensures you are equipped to perform your job role in the Aged Care sector, and the second method of assessment is where you give practical demonstrations of the tasks required in the job role for this course. These assessment tasks are conducted after you have had adequate preparation for the assessment and you will be supported throughout the assessment process. Some of the practical tasks will be done in the purpose-built facilities at RMIT; others will be done in your placement in a workplace setting.
Assessment Tasks
For this Unit you will be assessed on your skills and knowledge in a number of ways. Most of the skills you need can be developed and then demonstrated within the classroom as you communicate with your fellow students, and in addition, particular scenarios will be provided by the teacher where you can show further competence to meet the requirements of the unit.
A further check of your skills will be included as you undergo your work placement, and finally there will be a knowledge questionnaire, Final Assessment Seven at the conclusion of the teaching period (01/05/13) to to finalise your demonstration of competence.
The teacher and coordinator will prepare you throughout the program for the assessment tasks and assistance is available.
