Course Description

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to carry out work health and safety (WHS) requirements through safe work practices in a plumbing and services work environment.

The unit requires the performance of work in a safe manner through awareness of risks, work requirements and the planning and performance of safe work practices with concern for personal safety and the safety of others.

It includes the initial response to workplace emergencies; the safe use of electricity; the identification of hazardous materials, including asbestos; and compliance with legislated work safety practices.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor. Feedback will be provided throughout the course.

Assessment Tasks

Students must pass each of the following assessment tasks to demonstrate competent.

Task 1

Complete the resource book work sheets (‘Pearson’s Basic Plumbing Service Skills 2nd edition’, Pearson’s roofing and Student Leaners Recourse Book)

Task 2

Complete theory test/Underpinning questions (may be Verbal, print based or computer based) and submit for assessment.

Task 3

Complete a SWMS document appropriate for the task, sign and submit for assessment.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.


Assessment Tasks

Students are required to complete three different types of assessment tasks
1. Assessment 1 - Worksheets 1-8 as evidence of classroom participation ( 50% weighing)
2. Assessment 2 - Test on underpinning skills and knowledge ( 25% weighing)
3. Assessment 3 – completing SWMS ( 25% weighing).

To successfully complete this unit, a student needs to be deemed competent (CA grade) in all three assessment tasks.

NYC - Not yet competent
CA - Competence Achieved
DNS - Did not submit assessment
