Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide or assist a patient with their oral hygiene where the patient is unable to perform all or part of these tasks by themselves. The oral hygiene tasks for the patient are carried out within the framework of an individualised care support plan and within the workers designated role and responsibilities.
This unit applies to workers who provide direct patient care in a range of health and community services environments.

Overview of Assessment
You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have:
- performed effective oral hygiene practices on 3 different patients in the workplace
- used processes, aids and equipment appropriately in provision of oral hygiene, including performing the following tasks at least 1 time:

- tooth brushing
- soft tissue cleaning
- use of mouthwash
- care of dentures
- care of crown or bridge or implant or braces
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.
Regular attendance is necessary. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.
Assessment Tasks
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.
To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
Assessment task 1: AT1 Simulated case scenarios: visual oral health check and oral hygiene instruction
The task is based on the skills and knowledge required to identify variations and recognise oral health issues through a visual check, observation of patient behaviour and habits, signs and symptoms and physical condition of patients.
The student will identify oral health needs, provide instruction and assistance with appropriate plaque control techniques, advice on a range of oral health products and when and how to use, and suitable oral health aids appropriate to the patient’s individual needs, any smoking cessation support and advice, sports injury prevention advice, and dietary advice for oral health.
Instruction on oral hygiene of various fixed and removable dental appliances, natural dentitions for various ages and circumstances will be expected.
Assessment task 2: AT2 Oral presentation
This practical assessment will allow you to showcase your knowledge of a workplace patient to present an oral presentation whereby you have identified the patient’s oral hygiene requirements , including factors that influenced the patients oral health and how you responded by assisting the patient with their relevant oral hygiene needs

The workplace logbook provides:
