Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required for workers to participate in safe work practices to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others.

 

The unit applies to all workers who require knowledge of workplace health and safety (WHS) to carry out their own work, either under direct supervision or with some individual responsibility.

 

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Students will be involved in the following learning activities to meet requirements for this competency: • Face to Face classes • Written classroom tasks • Demonstration and classroom discussion • Group discussions • Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises • Clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session/completion of practical worksheets • Online learning via CANVAS • Self-managed research to support completion of assessments. • Students will be observed and assessed through their planned activities throughout the duration of the course

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials through CANVAS.

CANVAS is an online learning resource with the clear instruction and guidance for each unit. Within CANVAS are course description, teaching schedule, assessments and all relevant information and due dates, resources and other materials required for completion of each unit of competency.

Additional materials may be provided in class and lists of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.


Overview of Assessment

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role.

There must be demonstrated evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory WHS regulations, relevant codes of practice and workplace procedures:

  • contributed to a WHS meeting or inspection in workplace
  • conducted a workplace risk assessment and recorded the results
  • consistently applied workplace safety procedures in the day-to-day work activities required by the job role
  • followed workplace procedures for reporting hazards
  • followed workplace procedures for a simulated emergency situation.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.   Regular attendance is necessary.  Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1:


Knowledge Assessment   This assessment will be issued on Phase 1 Day 3.   Students will be required to log into CANVAS and the assessment must be researched, completed and submitted via Canvas Phase 2 Day 2. The exact due date will be issued to each group.     In order to achieve a Satisfactory result, students must complete ALL questions successfully. If the student does not achieve a satisfactory result, feedback will be provided via Canvas and the student to complete the re-submission.

Assessment Task 2:


WHS Inspection Assessment 

This assessment is conducted at RMIT during Phase 1 Day 4, as per timetable and the student's knowledge and skills will be observed in the simulated clinic. Detailed information will be provided via Canvas and to students during their class attendance.   Students will attempt the WHS Inspection Assessment  under supervision of the assessor and they will be marked with either a S (Satisfactory) or NS (Not Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTWHS001 Assessment document. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.   Student will receive verbal feedback on the assessments at the end of the workplace assessment.

 Assessment Task 3:

 

Simulated Emergency Procedures Practical Assessment    This assessment is conducted at RMIT during Phase 2, as per timetable and the student's knowledge and skills will be observed in the simulated clinic. Detailed information will be provided via Canvas and to students during their class attendance.   Students will attempt the Simulated Emergency Procedures Practical Assessment  under supervision of the assessor and they will be marked with either a S (Satisfactory) or NS (Not Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTWHS001 Assessment document. All assessment criteria must be successfully completed in order to achieve a satisfactory result.   Student will receive verbal feedback on the assessments at the end of the practical assessment.
