Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow organisational infection prevention and control procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks.

 This unit applies to individuals working in health and direct client care contexts.

Overview of Assessment

 

There will be four(4) assessments overall:

A knowledge quiz and 3 practical assessments including a combination of tasks including knowledge questions

  • Hand hygiene
  • Soiled linen
  • Managing spills

 

 


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 knowledge quiz

You must successfully complete a 16 question knowledge assessment task quiz -This assessment will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of infection prevention and control

 

Assessment Task 2: Hand hygiene 

Students are required to complete this task within  approximately 2 weeks. This assessment is to be completed within the 8th week of starting this unit.

In this task, you are required to demonstrate your knowledge of personal and hand hygiene for infection

Your assessor will arrange a simulation. You will not know the nature of this simulation until the commencement of the assessment task.

To prepare for this task:

1.      Go to Bagwan Health (or a workplace) and review the procedures relevant to infection prevention and control.

2.      Ensure you read these procedures and clarify any areas you are unsure of before the assessment.

 

Your assessor will set up the task for you, this will include conducting the assessment under simulated workplace conditions and reflecting your organisation’s (Bagwan Health) policies and procedures. You will be provided with two additional requirements that will need to be simulated on the day of your assessment. Your assessor will assume the role of your workplace supervisor, provide you with the simulated information and be physically present in the room with you.

During the task

At the beginning of this task, your assessor will give you some background information about the scenario. Confirm you understand the information before you start.

During the demonstration, your assessor will observe you performing the following steps relevant to the scenario that you are confronted with:

1.      identify the correct times to wash your hands

2.      demonstrate correct hand washing and drying technique

3.      apply a waterproof dressing to yourself in a way that ensures your own skin safety and the skin safety of others

4.      demonstration of how to don gloves when faced with exposure to a bodily function and infection risk

5.      demonstrate appropriate respiratory hygiene (including sneezing with and without tissues) and coughing techniques to minimise possible viral spread and aerosols contamination of items in the workplace

6.      Demonstrate how to remove gloves and dispose of waste (gloves, waterproof dressing and tissue) safely and appropriately.

 

While you complete these steps, your assessor will be checking to see that you:

1.      follow policies and procedures on infection control

2.      work in a safe manner and take appropriate actions to minimise risk.

 

Assessment Task 3: Processing soiled linen

This assessment is to be completed within the 8th week of the course  

In this task, you are required to demonstrate your knowledge of handling linen for transporting and processing for infection prevention and control. You are required to demonstrate the steps outlined below.

This assessment involves the simulation of soiled linen item (which could include an item of staff uniform, tea towel, table cloth, bed linen, etc.) that has been exposed and soiled by someone who is suspected of having a highly infectious disease.  You must check to confirm the item is linen before you attempt the assessment.

To prepare for this task:

  1. Go to Bagwan Health and review the procedures relevant to infection prevention and control.
  2. Ensure you read these procedures and clarify any areas you are unsure of before the assessment.

Your assessor will set up the task for you, this will include conducting the assessment under simulated workplace conditions, reflecting your organisation’s (Bagwan Health) policies and procedures. Your will be provided with the details of the simulation the day of your assessment; your assessor will assume the role of your workplace supervisor.

During the demonstration, your assessor will observe you performing the following steps relevant to the scenario that you are confronted with:

  1. demonstration of personal and hand hygiene
  2. correct choice and use of PPE
  3. handling of potentially infectious, soiled linen for processing
  4. safe removal and disposal of used PPE and any waste
  5. separating the solid linen from routine dirty linen.

While you complete these steps, your assessor will be checking to see that you:

  1. follow Health policies and procedures on infection control
  2. can explain how your handling of potentially infectious, soiled linen may differ from handling used, uncontaminated linen.
  3. work in a safe manner and take appropriate actions to minimise risk

Assessment Task 4: Managing Spills 

In this task, you are required to demonstrate your knowledge of managing bodily fluid spills for infection prevention and control.

There are three parts to this task:

Part A – written questions

Part B – practical demonstration

Part C - hazard identification and risk report.

You are required to answer the questions and demonstrate the steps outlined below. 

you are required to complete each of the three parts based on the scenario provided.

 

Part A -  Complete the seven written questions (you must do this independently) the questions require you to: 

  • identify the hazard you are presented with in this scenario
  • identify your responsibilities in the scenario
  • determine the likelihood and severity of harm of the identified hazards
  • identify what control measures you should put in place
  • identify clean and contaminated zones
  • identify appropriate measures to deal with records and clean or sterile equipment.

 

Part B - demonstrate how you would manage the hazardous spill as provided in the scenario (these will require your assessor to observe you complete marking criteria items 5-16).

 

Part C -  complete a Hazard Identification and Risk Report to record the incident and the actions that you took, as well as obtaining a signature from your “supervisor.”

 

While you complete these steps, your assessor will be checking to see that you: 

  • follow Bagwan Health policies and procedures on infection prevention and control
  • work in a safe manner and take appropriate actions to minimise risk.
