Course Description

This course covers the use of spreadsheet software to complete business tasks and produce usable complex documents.

Develop a linked spreadsheet solution

Performance Criteria:

Task is analysed and specifications for spreadsheets are determined 
Organisational and task requirements in relation to data entry, storage, output, reporting and presentation requirements are identified 
Spreadsheet design utilises software functions and formulae to meet identified requirements 
Spreadsheets are linked in accordance with software procedures 
Cells are formatted and data attributes assigned with relative and/or absolute cell references used in accordance with the task specifications 
Formulae are tested to confirm output meets task requirements

Element:

Automate and standardise spreadsheet operation

Performance Criteria:

Tasks are evaluated to identify those where automation would increase efficiency 
Macros are created, used and edited to fulfil the requirements of the task and automate spreadsheet operation 
Templates are developed, edited and used to ensure consistency of design and layout for forms and reports in accordance with organisational requirements

Represent numerical data in graphic form

Performance Criteria:

Style of graph is determined to meet specified requirements and spreadsheet data is manipulated if necessary to suit graph requirements 
Graphs are created with labels and titles from numerical data contained in a spreadsheet file 
Graph is saved, viewed and printed within designated timelines

Use safe work practices

Performance Criteria:

Workspace, furniture and equipment are adjusted to suit the ergonomic requirements of the user. 
Work organisation meets organisational and statutory requirements for computer operation. 
Energy and resource conservation techniques are used to minimise wastage in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.

Performance Criteria:

Data is entered, checked and amended in accordance with organisational and task requirements 
Data is imported / exported between compatible spreadsheets and host documents adjusted in accordance with software and system procedures 
Manuals, user documentation and on-line help are used to overcome problems with spreadsheet design and production 
Spreadsheet is previewed, adjusted and printed in accordance with organisational and task requirements 
Spreadsheet is named and stored, in accordance with organisational requirements and the application exited without data loss/damage

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievements of each competency in a flexible manner. Assessments will incorporate a variety of methods: class exercises, homework, practical project and tests. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. In addition to the assessments, formative feedback is provided to the students throughout the duration of the course

Learning activities will include class-based discussions, exercises, reading and reflection on various activities, in order to develop competency including the underpinning skills and knowledge.


Assessment Tasks

Week 4, assessment of element of competency - Represent numerical data in graphic form (10%).
Students will complete a practical test (open book) which focus’s on both the practical and theory components of developing and using complex spreadsheets.

Week 13, assessment of element of competency – Develop a linked spreadsheet solution, Automate and standardise spreadsheet operation, Use spreadsheets and Use safes work practices (40%).
Students will complete a practical test (open book) which focus’s on both the practical and theory components of developing and using complex spreadsheets.

Week 16, assessment of all elements of competency (50%)
Students will complete an end of semester exam which focus on the practical components of developing and using complex spreadsheets. Open book.
