Course Description

Students will learn the skills required to manage a project in the music business. The course focuses on essential
project management skills and the need to meet deadlines for outcomes and products.
It covers topics such as copyright, publishing, contracts, basic book-keeping skills, tax, self promotion and merchandising.

Provide detailed information on roles and responsibilities to those involved in the project
Clarify aim and confirm purpose, product, outcome of project for personnel involved
Support those involved in the project to ensure that agreed outcomes are achieved
Establish and maintain a file of all relevant documentation and correspondence
Monitor progress toward deadlines and take appropriate action where necessary to ensure timely outcomes
Complete reporting requirements as agreed
Implement and monitor financial control plans
Monitor human resources issues
Adjust plans and roles and responsibilities as required

Develop plan and confirm (as required): timeline, milestones, deliverables, and communication protocols
Build the reporting requirements into the plan

Consult with team members and take their views into account when formulating plan
Inform the team members and other interested personnel of the project, the deadlines and how it is to be organised

Prepare an assessment of guest lecturer’s business or expertise. Critically analyse the topic, the lecturer’s point of view, whether you would do things differently? What you have learned from the guest and how you can apply it to your music business.




Week 12 Oral Presentation of Music Business Topic    Weighting = 30%               Elements = 1, 2

Present your research on a music business of your choice. You should speak to the Proprietor /Director or staff within the business. How they got started? What advice they have given you.

Week 15 & 16 Written Assignment – Your Project (See attachment 1 )     Weighting = 50%               Elements = 1, 2, 3, 4


Each student will prepare a detailed project plan and present in class. Can be presented using any software package of the student’s choice. This will be part of your project plan.

All assignments are to be submitted on the due date as outlined. If you have illness or extenuating circumstances an extension can be negotiated. If you have not negotiated an extension for the above work deductions will be made for each day work is not submitted. 10% per day will be deducted for non submission.
