Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to originate the concept and conduct critical discourse about the concept for own work. The concept encompasses ideas, form and context for the work. The unit includes the need for research and analysis of ideas and references, plus the creation of innovative concepts. It also includes a requirement for critical and informed discourse with others about one’s own work.

Learning Outcomes
Details of Learning Activities
Students learn in collaborative sessions that incorporate hands-on techniques. Two major projects drive the inquiry into Original Ideas and Visual Concepts.
Each major project will comprise Idea Generation and Critique, Peer Review and Collaborative Practice, Individual Design Development, Refinement and production.
It is expected that some development will occur in out-of-session times in regards to the Quality Grading available for this Competency.
Discussion is used in these sessions and students will be asked to participate. These discussions intend to provoke robust debate and critical idea developement with the goal of creating strongly performing creative minds.
Current topics of interest will be used to initiate discussion including contemporary issues that relate to the role of the Designer & Creative in Australia and the International context.

Overview of Assessment
2 x projects
Students will be tutored with a verbal and/or written evaluation of their progress, within class time.
A final assessment of Competency Achieved or Not Yet Competent will be given at the end of the course when students will submit all completed work.
To be deemed competent students must satisfactorily complete all Learning Elements and related Performance Criteria.
Grading will be offered in addition to, and after, competency based assessment.
Assessment Tasks
There will be TWO Major Projects that make 100% of the total result.
Each is weighted 50%.
Major Project #1 - FLOW. A 2D or 3D exploration of a theme based upon generating Original Ideas and Experimental Forms and Elements.
Major Project #2 - SMART BIKE. A project that explores a Contemporary topic, generating useful concepts and developing Visual Identity and potential Motion Graphics.

Attendance
The major learning experience involves studio based exercises, demonstration and production. It is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.

All assessment tasks are required to be completed to a satisfactory level. If you are unable to complete any piece of assessment by the due date, you will need to apply for an extension.
