Course Description
This unit covers the fundamental communication skills needed to work in any sector of the finance industry. It includes the skills needed for interacting with customers, internal and external, and for giving, receiving and recording information.

The total number of scheduled hours of teaching, learning and assessment involved in this course will include all planned activities. This may incorporate face-to-face classes, lectures, workshops and seminars; wherever possible workplace visits, online learning and other forms of structured teaching and learning. The total scheduled hours includes the amount of effort required to undertake, evaluate and complete all assessment requirements, including observation of work performance, discussions with supervisors and others providing third party evidence and one on one and group assessment sessions with students.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical tests, problem solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work-based or course activities.
Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.
Assessment Tasks
The Training Package competency standard FNSICGEN301B Communicate in the Workplace requires that:
’For valid and reliable assessment of this unit, evidence should be gathered through a range of methods to indicate consistent performance.
Assessment of this unit of competence will usually include observation of processes and procedures, oral and/or written questioning on underpinning knowledge and skills and other methods as required.’
In order to conform to the requirements of this unit, participants should attend at least 80% of classes in order for observation of processes and procedures to be undertaken in class time.
Continuous assessment of participants will be undertaken by observation of a range of activities (both oral and written) during class time (Weeks 1 - 15) for participants to be assessed as either Competent (CA - Competency Achieved) or Not yet competent (NYC).
Participants who achieve competency by Week 15 will be eligible to elect to sit for a graded assessment in Week 16. Participants who are assessed as Not yet competent (NYC) in Week 15 will be ineligible to sit for a graded assessment in Week 16.
The Graded Assessment in Week 16 will take the form of written questions and/or case studies.
