Course Description
Produce Writings –Writing for Children supports the attainment of skills and knowledge required to write and market material for young children.
You are introduced to the works of various children’s writers and examine the techniques used in writing picture storybooks, junior novels and other forms of fiction and non-fiction materials for children. You also experiment with a range of approaches and techniques while creating your own body of work.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights to your writing tasks.
Assessment Tasks
To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessment.
Semester 1.
Assessment 1.Book Reviews. (5%)
A review of a minimum of 15 picture books. As you read each book, write a brief review to be shared with class members. This works as a starting point for discussion and become a shared resource for the class.
Due Weeks 7,8,9 (March 19th and 26th, April 2nd )
Assessment 2. Picture Book Texts. (30%)
Submit two texts suitable for picture books. Submissions to include:
•a fully drafted text arranged in 24 or 32 pages
•a dummy
•notes about the illustrations
•a letter/pitch to an appropriate publisher
•three Australian publishers to whom you may send your text
•a reflection on the process of writing: Consider your starting point, how you have engaged the audience, workshopping, redrafting and dealing with problems
Due Week 14 (May 14 )
Assessment 3: Non-fiction article. (10%)
An article suitable for Comet or Explore magazines, following the guidelines put out by the publishers on their website regarding themes, word count, content etc. Due Week 15 (May 21.)
Assessment 4: Workshopping (5%)
Ongoing workshopping of writing exercises and projects
Semenster 2
Assessment 1: Book Reviews. (5%)
A review of a minimum of 3 junior novels. As you read each book, write a brief review to be shared with class members. This works as a starting point for discussion and become a shared resource for the class.
Due Weeks 3,4 and 5 (July 16, 23 and 30 )
Assessment 2: Group Presentation (10%)
A 10 -15 minute class presentation on a subject of your choice. The subject should be related to children’s literature and you need to to let the teacher know the topic you have chosen at least a week before their presentation date is due. You are required to hand in the written notes from their talk with all sources acknowledged. Due Weeks 11-14 (September 10th, 17th and October 8th, 15th)
Assessment 3: Novel - 5,000 words. (30%)
Although the final draft is due in Week 15 Oct 22 there are four stages to hand in or present in class during the semester.
- Opening of novel - Due week 2 (July 9th)
- Draft of novel in progressand reflection on process - Due week 7 (August 13th)
- Presentation of cover design- Due weeks 9 and 10 (August 27th, September 3rdz)
- Finished NovelDue week 15 (October 22nd)
Assessment 4: Workshopping. (5%)
Ongoing workshopping of writing exercises and projects

70 – 79% DI Distinction

Submission of Assessment Tasks
You are required to submit all assessment tasks in hard copy with a completed School of Media and Communication cover sheet. You are expected to keep a copy of all assignments submitted.
Late Submissions
If you are unable to complete any piece of assessment by the due date, you will need to apply for an extension before that due date.
