Course Description

This unit is concerned with infection control responsibilities of employees with supervisory accountability to implement and monitor infection control policy and procedures in a specific work unit or team within an organisation

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Explain accurately and clearly to the work group relevant information about infection control policy and procedures, and applicable industry codes of practice
1.2 Regularly provide information about identified hazards and the outcomes of infection risk assessments to the work group
1.3 Provide opportunities for the work group to seek further information on workplace infection control issues and practices

2.1 Implement infection control policy and procedures with members of the work group
2.2 Maintain liaison with person responsible for organisation-wide infection control
2.3 Provide coaching and support as required to ensure that individuals/teams are able to implement infection control practices
2.4 Adopt work procedures to reflect appropriate infection control practice
2.5 Deal with issues raised through consultation and ensure they are resolved promptly or referred to the appropriate personnel for resolution
2.6 Implement workplace procedures for dealing with infection control risks and hazardous events as necessary

Overview of the NHMRC Infection control guidelines and the ADA Infection control guidelines relating to current regulations, Australian standards, and expected industry protocols covering all areas of infection control and reprocessing instruments in a dental practice.

Students are provided with opportunity throughout the session to ask questions and reflect on their current practises at their workplace.

Facilitator explores the need for a policy document for all staff at a dental practise in reference to the Dental Board of Australia’s stipulated regulations.

Facilitator provides ideas on how to develop a policy document /manual contextualised to their own workplace staff.

Assessment #1

Hours required to undertake this learning activity: 21hours

You are to design and develop a Policies and Procedures for Infection Control Manual for your clinic to assist in maintaining a consistent approach to infection control protocols by all staff members. The student  may need to audit the workplace against expected industry regulations and guidelines to commence the policy development.


Your document should be easy to read by all staff including new staff (and trainees)

Topics relevant to infection control in dental practice to include in the policy document is provided in writing by the facilitator at the first class.

Document is be authenticated by the Workplace supervisor: Dentist

Submission date: 13 May 2011

The student is to submit the document for evaluation by the facilitator. Feedback is provided in writing to the student by Friday 17

Assessment #2

Hours required to undertake this learning activity: 21 hours

A report covering the development, implementation and monitoring of policy procedures

Student is to

1.Provide information about their strategy to develop the policy document ( Assessment #1) and how they implemented the policy document into their workplace with evidence of this strategy.
   (For example: copies of authenticated minutes of staff meetings, staff evaluation sheets)

2.Provide information regarding the process have you put in place to monitor all staff in adhering to the policy’s listed protocols?

3.Outline what procedure has been developed by the student for any improvements to the policy document, which may be identified by you and/or other staff, now and in the future?

Other Information

Pre requisite for Assessment #2 is assessment #1 fully completed ,authenticated and evaluated by the facilitator to industry standards for a infection control policy document for a dental practice.

Assessment# 2 must be fully completed and authenticated ,responding to all listed task requirements to industry standards for infection control policy and adherence to protocols by all staff in a dental practice.

Both assessment documents must be provided with a RMIT coversheet ,in a word processed format , bound or contained with referenced diagrams , photos and information.

In the event that the student attains a NYC ( not yet competent ) result  for an assessment, the student has 2 Weeks from the date of receipt to improve the areas indicated by the assessor/facilitator and to submit the improved document to the dental office.

On successful completion of both assessment #1 and Assessment #2 the student will be awarded a result of CA ( competency achieved)

Non submission of one or both assessments will result in NYC. The student may be required to re-enrol into the unit which  will incur additional fees.

Due dates are to be adhered to , as stipulated in this course guide, which are within the enrolment period.

Details regarding Special consideration application to defer submission of one of both assessment tasks can be sought via the RMIT web pages .This application must be submitted to the RMIT university within 48 hours of the submission due date for consideration.
