Course Description

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to select raw materials for use in textile production.

Details of Learning Activities

At the completion of this course you will have demonstrated your ability to select raw materials, check raw materials and report on them.

This unit is integrated into the production projects undertaken in VART 5910C Apply Manipulation Techniques to Create Experimental Textile Samples.

You will have opportunities to demonstrate your abilities to select raw materials, check raw, and report on them. During this unit your skills and knowledge will also be monitored through observational checklists and you will have the opportunity for questioning and further instruction.

Overview of Assessment

 

To achieve successful completion of this course students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency.

 

Assessment tasks have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner.

Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt.

Units assessed as ’not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ’competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher.
All work must be submitted by the due date. Late submission will not be graded higher than a PASS.


Assessment Tasks

Throughout the unit you will demonstrate the ability to select raw materials, check raw materials and report on raw materials during selected textile design and production processes. This assessment will take the form of observational checklist conducted by your trainer at weeks 3, 6 and 12 as well as documentation of your materials undertaken by you for the following projects:

Project 1 Under and over produce 3D woven sample choice of materials

Project 2 Collars and Cuffs: disperse dye/thermoplastic manipulation using choice of synthetic fabrics Production incorporating traded resource

Project 3 punctured,pricked,perforated - an exploration of constructed textile structures using a range of described materials. Production incorporating traded resource plus min. 2 manipulation techniques

Project 4 knotnetcoil exploration - of constructed textiles

Technical Folio: including evidence completed 3D sculptural form; dye samples; thermoplastic samples; project samples; OHS requirements; class handouts and recipes

In addition project 2 and 3 includes Trade Up Resource Register which requires you to select and describe a material resource, and present it as part of a class resource register.

This course is run in a workshop environment, to comply with Occupational Health & Safety standards you students are required to wear sturdy footwear with covered toe protection, and other personal protective equipment where instructed.
