Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to complete detailed specifications for fashion designs to guide production.

2.  Identify specification standards used by industry

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Key features of different types of specification sheets are described.
1.2. Types of drawing techniques used on specification sheets are identified.
2.1. Acceptable deviations from the set standards for sizing and quality are identified.
2.2. Common faults and discrepancies and their causes are identified.
2.3. Industry standards in relation to sizing are identified.
2.4. Impact of industry sizing deviations on specifications are identified.
3.1. Design instructions are analysed and interpreted.
3.2. Drawing/ sketch is produced on specification sheet.
3.3. Specification sheet is completed with all relevant information according to workplace practices.
3.4. Set deviations are recorded on specification sheet.
4.1. Finished product is compared against specifications.
4.2. Deviations are identified and recorded.
4.3. Any appropriate action is taken according to workplace practices.

Details of Learning Activities

In this course students will be assessed on:
1. The development of a range of specification sheets to fashion industry standards(Individual progressive assessment), and
2. Producing a specification pack based on a design brief for a garment in an industry project. This will be presented to a panel at the end of the year (Group assessment).
 


Teaching Schedule

Week 1 Revisit the last two components of this module
Introduction to the specification pack development
Assessment overview.

Week 2 -4 Design / Fabric & Make Specification development
Students are to develop a design spec for a selected garment and accessories
They must include the following:
• Clear technical drawings both front and back view including measurements
• design features and specifying accurately.
• Fabric/s fibre content and widths
• Colour range, including fabric swatches and embellishment samples.
• Size range
• Style name and number
5 - 7 Design / Fabric & Make Specification development Continued
- Pattern and make Specification
Students are to develop a pattern spec for a selected garment and accessories
They must include the following:
• design features and specifying accurately.
• Fabric/s fibre content and widths
• Colour range, including fabric swatches and embellishment samples.
• Size range
• Style name and number
• Clear technical drawings both front and back view including measurements
• Pattern pieces are listed with correct terminology
• Buttons, zips or other design features included.
Term Break - Monday 2nd September – Friday 13th September = 2 weeks

Term 4 = Monday 16th September – Friday 15th November = 9 weeks

8-10 Design / Fabric & Make Specification development Continued
- Construction/ make Specification
Students are to develop a construction/make spec for a selected garment and accessories
They must include the following:
• Clear technical drawings both front and back view including measurements
• Stitch/seam types are included
• Types of labels or markings listed
• Care instructions, size and positioning
11 -13 Size and Grading specification development
Students are to develop a sizing & grading spec for a selected garment and accessories
They must include the following:
• design features and specifying accurately.
• Size range
• Style name and number
• Clear technical drawings both front and back view.
• Measurements for base size of pattern and one size up and down graded correctly.

Label /Bill of Material Specification development.
Students are to develop a label/bill of material spec for a selected garment and accessories.
All labels to be designed and include-
• Develop computer images of swing tickets/tags include colour and dimensions
• Label positioning on garment
• Label font size, type and style
• Style name/ range/season
• Size range
• Date
• Label type – primary/secondary
14 - 16 Quality control Checklist/template –
Students are to develop a quality template spec for a selected garment and accessories.
Inclusions are:
• Raw materials Inspection
• Garment Inspection methods
• Identification of faults.
• Pre – production
• Production
• Post production
• Space for quality controller to check off, including date/time and signature
• Comments field
• Special instructions/recommendations
• Manufacturing processes in sequence.

17 Completed Final Specification Pack for assessment to be presented.

Overview of Assessment

In this course you will be assessed on the development of a range of specification sheets and a specification pack produced for a garment in an industry project.


Assessment Tasks

Specific information relating to the assessment task will be given in class time.

1. Individual class work. (Progressively assessed) 50%
2. Final specification pack: Assessment. 50%

Each component is to be produced to industry standards and is to be completed by the due date:
80% of the work to be completed during class time to achieve a competency.
Late work will not be accepted without prior discussion with teacher
