Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge to use and apply sizing systems appropriate for designing garments.

1.1 Australian approaches to sizing standards are identified and described.
1.2 Sizing systems are identified and described.
1.3 International sizing systems are identified.
1.4 Advantages and disadvantages of sizing systems are described.
2.1 Intended purpose of the design is established.
2.2 Design specifications are read and interpreted.
2.3 Design brief is clarified with designer where necessary.
2.4 Body measurements and their effect on sizing are analysed.
2.5 Body characteristics and their effect on sizing are analysed.

3.1 Appropriate sizes from sizing system for the design are identified and
explained.
3.2 Effects of inappropriate sizing for the design are identified and
explained.
3.3 Size chart is developed where required.

Details of Learning Activities

This unit covers the skills and knowledge to use and apply sizing systems appropriate for designing garments.

  • You will investigate and describe national and international sizing.
  • You will learn how to interpret a design brief and apply it to analyse and assess sizing for design.
  • Throughout this course you will consider the application of OH&S practices in work operations and maintain accurate records of your findings.

Familiarisation with female templates for skirt, tailored pant, set-in sleeve shirt, Magyar/raglan shape, t-shirt/kimono shape & jean.
Start skirt unit - pencil, dirndl
 
 Week 2 - 3  Continue with skirt unit
- skirt research assignment - Skirt Silhouettes
- flip skirt with yoke.
- 6 gore A-line skirt,
- 8 gore trumpet skirt,
- straight skirt with front pocket, front buttoning
 
 Week 4 - 6  Sizing Systems
Lecture - Historical development of sizing systems.
Case study: Comparison of Australian and International sizing systems
Assignment: Sizing and Fitting
