Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge to use and apply sizing systems appropriate for designing garments.

Details of Learning Activities

In this course students will be assessed on:
1.The development of a range of specification sheets to fashion industry standards(Individual progressive assessment), and
2.Producing a specification pack based on a design brief for a garment in an industry project. This will be presented to a panel at the end of the year (Group assessment).


Teaching Schedule


Semester 1: Term 1 = Monday 11th February – Thursday 28th March 2013

Week 1Course Introduction:
Introduction to the production specification course and how the three majour components will be delivered.
Flat drawing vs fashion drawing
Grading and sizing
Explanation of Specifications sheets.
Demonstration of types of spec sheets and their use
Assessments overview.
Weeks
2 - 7Flat drawing exercises.
Students are to draw sample garments for specifications
•Tee shirts
•Skirts
•Shirts
•Pants
Students choice: Garments and accessories that students plan on using in their final specification pack

Progressive assessment weekly.
Folio to be presented at end of term 2 for final assessment.


Term Break - Friday 29th March – Friday 5th April = 1 week

Term 2 = Monday 8th April – Friday 14th June = 10 weeks


Weeks 8 - 17Sizing and Grading exercises.
Using the drawings developed in term 1; Students are to identify and mark measuring points on the following garments:
•Tee shirts
•Skirts
•Shirts
•Pants
Grading increments described, explained and applied.
Specification sheets.
Progressive assessment weekly.
Folio to be presented last week of term 2 for final assessment.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on your analysis of a specified case study and a comparison to a current product in the marketplace.


Assessment Tasks

In this course you will be assessed on the development of a range of specification sheets and a specification pack produced for a garment in an industry project.
Regular class attendance is necessary to demonstrate an understanding of each element. You are expected to competently complete all practical class work, which will be assessed individually, and a group assessment task based on an industry brief.
Specific information relating to the assessment task will be given in class time.

1. Individual class work. (Progressively assessed) 50%
2. Final specification pack: Assessment. 50%
