Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement and monitor the organisation’s occupational health and safety (OHS) policies, procedures and programs in the relevant work area to meet legislative requirements. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

This unit contains employability skills.

Systematically identify OHS training needs in line with organisational requirements

Identify and report to management the costs associated with providing training for work team, for inclusion in financial plans

Accurately explain relevant provisions of OHS legislation and codes of practice to the workgroup 

Provide information to the workgroup on the organisation's OHS policies, procedures and programs, ensuring it is readily accessible by the workgroup 

Regularly provide and clearly explain information about identified hazards and the outcomes of risk assessment and control to the workgroup

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include class-based exercises and discussions, demonstrations and observations in order to develop competency including the underpinning skills and knowledge. Formative feedback is provided to students throughout the duration of the course.

Some learning activities will include a self-directed learning approach. Self-directed learning refers to organised teacher-directed learning activities that you will undertake independently, either as individuals or with other students. This may include workplace research, library assignments, field work and work placements.

Overview of Assessment

Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievements of each element of competency in a flexible manner. Assessments may incorporate a variety of methods such as:

  • analysis of responses to case studies and scenarios
  • direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
  • review of records communicating the outcomes of consultation over OHS issues to the workgroup
  • demonstration of techniques
  • review of reports to management on the costs associated with providing training for the work team
  • oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of workplace safety and hazards
  • examples of risk assessments
  • evaluation of actioning of team member hazard reports.


Assessment Tasks

Students are to complete individually six assessment pieces from your text Scope, BSBOHS407A Monitor a safe workplace, Pearson Education Australia, assessing each element of competency. To obtain competency for this course students must satisfactorily pass each assessment piece. If students obtain a result of NYC for any assessment piece they will have an opportunity to resubmit the assessment, once only, within one week of receiving feedback from their teacher. Resubmitted work will only receive a result of CA or NYC. Results are recorded as follows:

  1. Competency Achieved - CA
  2. Competent Credit - CC
  3. Competent Distinction - CDI
  4. Competent High Distinction - CHD
  5. Not yet competent - NYC

It is the responsibility of full-time students to attend class and receive feedback unless otherwise agreed with their teacher.

Assessment 2: Implement and monitor participative arrangements for the management of OHS.

You are required to undertake three activities for this assessment. This involves responses to scenarios and questions to assess your knowledge of workplace safety requirements.

Assessment 3: Implement and monitor the organisation’s procedures for providing OHS training.

You are required to complete four questions related to a case study to assess your knowledge and skills in implementing and monitoring procedures for providing OHS training.

Assessment 4: Implement and monitor procedures for identifying hazards and assessing risks.

You are required to complete four questions related to a case study to assess your knowledge on implementing and monitoring procedures for identifying hazards and assessing risks.

Assessment 5: Implement and monitor the organisation’s procedures for controlling risks.

You are required to inspect a work area to identify any hazards and respond to questions to assess your knowledge of risk control measures.
