Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and apply basic industry practices within the creative arts industries. It addresses the collection, application and updating of general information relevant to work roles within the creative arts industry sectors, including industry structures and operations, employment obligations and opportunities, the impact of new technology and the identification of industry laws and regulations.

Assessment Tasks

Please note that assessment tasks for this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered as essential building blocks for more substantial summative assessment tasks. To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete all of the following assessment tasks to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessment.

Formative Assessment
1. Notes from 3-4 guest speaker discussions. The sessions are designed for you to gather information about the special guest speaker, their career in the audiovisual industry and for you to gain a deeper understanding of the industry itself. You will have a question sheet to assist you and you are required take notes at each session which your peers or teacher will review. This assessment will be conducted in Weeks 2 – 5, Semester 1.

Summative Assessment
2. Case Study
Brief: You are required to put together a Case Study on a Wiki page in Blackboard that demonstrates your ability to identify a particular Audiovisual Company (or department or individual) and its role within the Audiovisual Industry and present it to class. It is due in TAFE Week 5, Semester 1

Aim: To demonstrate your ability to source and apply industry information, identify industry laws and regulations and update and maintain industry knowledge. Please refer to the Commonwealth Training Unit in Blackboard (online) to ensure you cover the performance criteria for these elements.

To demonstrate competency EMPL5645C, Develop and Apply Creative Arts Industry Knowledge CUFIND201A you must successfully put together a Case Study that demonstrates your ability to identify a particular individual, Audiovisual Company (or Department) and its role within the Audiovisual Industry. The Case Study is to be placed on your Wiki page in Blackboard.

Pick one of the Case Study methods below to complete your assessment:

1. Record an interview with a notable audiovisual employer or employee who interests you. Ensure to discuss; the company and it’s people, it’s role in the industry, company highlights, their client market, day to day business, new technology used by the company and company goals. You must also include information on the laws and regulations affecting the company and its work, including the implications of breaching these laws and how they avoid this possibility in the first place.

2. Review a notable Audiovisual Company describing; the company and it’s people, it’s role in the industry, company highlights, client market and day to day business, new technology used by the company, and company goals. You must also include information on the laws and regulations affecting the company and its work, including the implications of breaching these laws and how they avoid this possibility in the first place.

3. Invent an Audiovisual Company you would love to own and run, describing; the company and it’s people, it’s role in the industry, company highlights, client market and day to day business, new technology used by the company and company goals. You must also include information on the laws and regulations affecting the company and its work, including the implications of breaching these laws and how you plan to avoid this possibility in the first place.

Your Case Study must demonstrate that it is your own work and it must also demonstrate your ability to source a range of information on one person, company or department in the Audiovisual Industry. Please include a bibliography and be sure reference details taken from websites and other areas to avoid plagiarism. If you are conducting an interview, please include the details of the interview (length, date, venue and questions).

Grading: This assignment is a summative assessment and attributes to the grade applied to this unit.

Work Placement
It is a requirement of this program that all students participate in authentic work related tasks. These may be either simulated or in a real work environment. On occasion, we are approached by industry and given opportunities for students to apply for short term placements. When these placement opportunities arise, students are required to negotiate the specific details with the relevant program coordinator or teacher. All industry placements require students, RMIT staff and host organisations to sign a written agreement prior to the commencement of the placement.
