Course Description

In this unit you are required to interpret vision system production requirements, participate in run-through’s and ultimately operate a range of vision systems during a live production or event. You will also be required to disassemble equipment. Vision system technicians who operate equipment in a range of live production environments require these skills. The technician may or may not be responsible for installation and set up.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Liaise with relevant personnel and interpret the vision system plan to determine and confirm the vision system requirements
1.2 Identify rigging, cabling and power requirements and calculate accurately in accordance with the vision system plan
1.3 Select, assemble and test equipment and accessories and consumables to ensure that they are working and prepared for installation
1.4 Recognise faults and take appropriate remedial action
1.5 Pre-rig all relevant vision system equipment as required by the vision system plan and in accordance with licensing regulations
1.6 Prepare, roll, test and service extension leads, looms and cables in accordance with design specifications, enterprise and legislative requirements
1.7 Construct or devise effects and masking as required
1.8 Establish contingency plans in the event of equipment malfunction and prepare back-up equipment

2.1 Determine the positioning of all vision systems and the necessary support requirements
2.2 Install supports or check that any rigging and mounts have been installed in the appropriate position
2.3 Use safe lifting and handling techniques to install all vision systems, primary and back-up, according to the requirements of the plan
2.4 Lay and secure power and other cables to avoid damage and hazardous situations

3.1 Patch and test all equipment and accessories to ensure operational efficiency and working order
3.2 Check all equipment in conjunction with other technical operations as required
3.3 Identify any problems and modify the installation or technical elements of the equipment in consultation with the appropriate personnel
3.4 Complete any documentation according to enterprise procedures and provide copies to relevant personnel as required

Formative Assessment

1. Research Webpage
In groups of 2, you are expected to produce an information rich website, on a chosen field of investigation using up to date, relevant information on one type of presentation technology which you will then present to class. To create in Week 5 (Friday 9th August) and present to class in Week 6 (Friday 16th August) 2013

2. Practical class exercises
You are required to successfully prepare, rig, test and modify various AV presentation systems in small teams as directed by your teacher. This assessment will be conducted over 5 weeks, from Week 8 (Friday 30th August) to week 12 (Friday 11th October) 2013

Summative Assessment

3. AV Set-up
You are required to successfully prepare, rig, test and modify an AV presentation system in a small team as directed by your teacher under test conditions.
This assessment will be conducted in Weeks 13 (Friday 18th October) and 14 (Friday 25th October) 2013

To produce an information rich webpage in Gmail Sites on a chosen field of investigation from the list below in groups of 2.

Brief
The task is a group assignment in pairs designed to inform ‘potential clients’ and assess your knowledge and further research skills in an area of Presentation Technology. You need to imagine that your team is an audiovisual supplier who is informing and recommending goods and services (from your chosen field of investigation above) to your client (RMIT University) and explain the following in your assignment;
1.How the technology works. Include diagrams, descriptions and brands.
2.Describe who you are (an invented AV company) and the space in RMIT University where the Presentation Technology could be installed.
3.Explain the various uses for the technology in the AV industry.

Presentation Requirements (on Gmail Sites)
1.A home page explaining who you are (an invented AV company) and the space in RMIT University where the Presentation Technology could be installed.
2.Page 2 explaining how the technology works, including diagrams.
3.Page 3 showing examples of at least 4 different brands and 2 different styles of the specified technology with pictures.
4.Page 4 explaining the various uses for the technology in the AV industry

•Present the information clearly and logically, using diagrams and hyperlinks to websites/blogs/forums/etc on every page
•Each student must author at least 2 pages each (open and build the content of 2 pages)
•You do not have to use your own words, but the information you include must be accurate, with referencing for all text, pictures and diagrams (copy and paste the URL next to the content)
•You are then required to each present your Wiki to the class in the second week

2. Practical Class Exercises

Aim: To successfully prepare, rig, test and modify AV presentation systems in small teams as directed by your teacher.

Brief for each of the days:
Each team will set-up and pack down a small projection system in a specified time frame. All set-ups must be treated like the client would expect;
•Neat, safe and all in working order
•Correct interpretation of the vision system plan
•Technical knowledge of the operating functions of the audiovisual equipment used
•Correct industry terms and codes of behavior used (including teamwork and leadership skills)
•Observation of occupational health and safety principles, procedures and regulations

Your assessment must demonstrate that it is your own work and that you have a good understanding of the elements involved in Prepare, Rig, Test and Modify Vision Systems MIET 6092C.

Grading:
This assessment is a formative assessment and attributes to passing the unit. It is designed to demonstrate your understanding of the practical and theoretical components of the unit. Summative Assessment Task

3. AV set-up


Aim
To successfully prepare, rig, test and modify an AV presentation system in a small team as directed by your teacher.

Brief
In pairs within a time frame of 30 minutes you will be required to decipher a vision system plan, then set-up, test and dismantle an AV presentation system. This is an open book assessment; you can refer to your notes. Each group will be given one of the following vision systems to prepare, rig, test and modify;

1.Video projector, screen, DVD player, camera, vision mixer and sound system
2.Monitor on a stand, camera, DVD player, PA system
3.DLP projector, screen, PC & Mac laptops, data vision mixer and preview monitor
4.Two set-ups;
a.Monitor on a stand with a DVD player
b.Data projector and screen with 2 laptops
5.DLP data projector and a laptop on rear projection truss screen

Your team will be chosen on the day by the teacher. Each team will have thirty minutes to complete the practical task set. All set-ups must be treated like the corporate client would expect;
•Neat, safe and all in working order
•Easy for the client to operate
•Correct interpretation of the vision system plan
•Set-up using the best use of space/environment
•Technical knowledge of the operating functions of the audiovisual equipment used
•Correct industry terms and codes of behavior used (including teamwork and leadership skills)
•Observation of occupational health and safety principles, procedures and regulations

Your team will need to select the appropriate equipment for the task given.
Assessment Criteria A rubric will be used to grade you individually. Fair and reasonable practical participation in the group is expected. Occupational health and safety principles, procedures and regulations, especially safe lifting techniques, must be observed.
