Course Description
In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge to align and sew uppers for footwear production. You will learn to plan and organise to sew uppers and be able identify any processing problems.

Details of Learning Activities
Integrated learning consisting of theory and practical components will be carried out in practical workshops for the skills and knowledge required to Operate machine to sew upper while performing classroom based activities and producing shoes.
Teaching Schedule
Practical workshops to Operate machine to sew upper will be conducted in conjunction with other practical based learning. Workshops will include demonstration of techniques and students will be required to demonstrate their practical skills to operate machine to sew upper for each pair of shoes produced for assessment.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester on all assessment tasks.
All assessment tasks must be completed before competency can be achieved. Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is encouraged.

Assessment Tasks
During a one on one practical observation assessment, students will demonstrate and answer relevant questions regarding the knowledge and skills required to operate a sewing machine and sew an upper to a competent standard.
Student will submit for assessment a pair of oxford styled shoes. Shoes to be produced are to be to an industry standard. Included in the production of these shoes, student will demonstrate how to operate a machine to sew upper using safe & efficient methods.
Assessment One: Due Week 4, Practical; Operate sewing machine and perform sewing on patterns provided.
Assessment Two: Due Week 7, Practical; Perform Bobbin winding, top assembly Re-threading, replace needle, Tension adjustment, and answer questions regarding the operation of a sewing machine to a competent standard. This will be conducted during class as a one on one with the assessor.
Assessment Three: Due Week 16, Submission of a completed pair Oxford styled Shoes.
