Course Description

The unit applies to following defined OHS policies and procedures in order to ensure own safety and that of others in the workplace.

You will develop skills and knowledge required with self management to follow OHS practices when performing tasks, and learning skills to participate in OHS related training. Communication skills and understanding of team approach to OHS are also required to interpret and understand what is required to provide a safe workplace for self and others. This unit also requires the ability to use initiative and enterprise and problem solving strategies to identify and act upon hazards and risks within the workplace.

Details of Learning Activities

1. Occupational Health and Safety Laws: the role of Work Cover and who to contact
2. Ways of contributing to workplace safety: methods of reporting hazards, the role of the Health and Safety Representative and Safety Committee.
3. Participation in O H &S in the workplace: the responsibilities of the employer and the employee.
4. Correct setup of workstation.


Teaching Schedule

Week 1: Introduction to OH&S Set Up Workstation to comply with OH& S standards
Weeks 2 - 16: Continued in class activities using correct OH&S practice in production room. Ongoing Safety Work through completing of tasks and activities in OH&S Workbook.
Week 16: Final submission of OH&S Workbook

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester on all assessment tasks.

All assessment tasks must be completed before competency can be achieved. Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is encouraged.

Completion of OH&S Workbook
Staff observation of student complying with OH&S requirements while performing practical tasks, including the use of machinery, tools and raw materials.
Task to assess functionality of Eye Wash machine and formal sign off that task has been completed competently
