Regardless of the mode of delivery, represent a guide to the relative teaching time and student effort required to successfully achieve a particular competency/module. This may include not only scheduled classes or workplace visits but also the amount of effort required to undertake, evaluate and complete all assessment requirements, including any non-classroom activities.
Pre-requisites and Co-requisites
This unit has linkages to a wide range of other units in various Training Packages and combined assessment and/or training with those units would be appropriate.
Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a range of CADD program functions and features to produce drawings. People working in many industries require the skills and knowledge in this unit, and the unit is written to allow for contextualisation to a particular industry context. Within the cultural industries this unit is relevant for people working across multiple sectors. The focus of this unit is on the technical skills required to operate CADD, and design skills are found in other units within the Visual Arts Craft and Design Training Package.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Learning Outcomes
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a range of CADD program functions and features to produce drawings
Details of Learning Activities
In Class Activities will include:
- Use of class computers for the preparation of working drawings
- Internet use for dowloading both images and blocks used in the project
- On-line assessment quizzes done during class
- In class "AutoCAD command" self tutorial exercises / videos
- In class drawing activities
- Student group activites
- A number of new 2D drawings will be completed in the semester in a standard that would be expected in industry
Out of class activities will include:
- Online research
- Independent project based work
- As assessment will involve student group interaction, it is in your interest to attend all classes.
Self Directed Learning - Some activities will include a self directed learning approach, self-directed learning refers to organised activities that students undertake independently, either as individuals or with other students, that are supervised by a teacher. This may include workplace research, library assignments. field trips and work placements.
Teaching Schedule
For weekly outline of teaching schedule & course outline, please refer to the "Blackboard" link located in myRMIT in the relevant folder.
Please note:
While your teacher will cover all the material outlined in the Weekly Outline, the weekly order is subject to change depending on class needs and availability of resources.

Other Resources
- Home computer - It is advisable that you have a computer at home on which to do your self directed work
- Software - "AutoCAD 2012" software is available for access via RMIT for all students enrolled in the program. Authorisation for the software can also be sought via AutoDesk. Details will be given in class
- Authorisation - You can then receive an authorisation for the use of the software for 36 months at a time direct from AutoDesk (details will be supplied in first week)
- Self paced online tutorial - If you find you are struggling with Revit, as an RMIT student you will have access to the Lynda.com website tutorials. This can only be done for free via the link below:
- Building 8, level 7 - 24 hour, 7 day a week access is available to the "open labs" in building 8 if you require the use of a computer. Booking may be required (and will ensure you have a PC for you)

Overview of Assessment
The following evidence is critical to the judgement of competence in this unit:
• ability to use the standard features and functions of a CADD program to produce drawings
• knowledge of CADD capabilities and uses in relation to the specific industry context.
The assessment context must provide for:
• practical demonstration of skills using an industry-current CADD program to develop drawings for a specific workplace purpose.
Assessment Tasks
Task 1:
Whilst learning the basics of drawing in AutoCAD 2012, you will create a very basic floor plan of a building. This will include all appropriate drawing standards. Extent of the drawing is outlined in a brief that is available in blackboard. This is an assessible task (as either competent or not yet competent). The drawing is to be ammended if below standard until competency is attained.
Task 2:
In further development of AutoCAD commands and use, you will create a more detailed plan of a specific area in your building, as well as at least one elevation. Extent of the drawing is outlined in a brief that is available in blackboard. This is an assessible task (as either competent or not yet competent). The drawing is to be ammended if below standard until competency is attained.
Task 3:
In further development of AutoCAD commands and use, you will create a 3D drawing (probably an isometric, however a different drawing may be decided). Extent of the drawing is outlined in a brief that is available in blackboard. This is an assessible task (as either competent or not yet competent). The drawing is to be ammended if below standard until competency is attained.
Task 4:
The final task will be an extension to task 1 and 2 - increase the documentation set. This will be the only graded assessment for the course. However, tasks 1 to 3 inclusive must be completed and submitted to a competent level prior to submission of task 4.
Assessment Matrix
For assessment matrix, refer to the "Blackboard" link located in myRMIT". This file is the "assessment" folder in the relevant course folder
All components must be addressed to gain a pass in this course and be deemed competent overall
CHD | Competent with High Distinction |
CDI | Competent with Distinction |
CC | Competent with Credit |
CAG | Competency Achieved – Graded |
NYC | Not Yet Competent |
DNS | Did Not Submit for Assessment |
Other Information
Attendance:
The major learning experience involves studio based exercises, demonstration and production. It is strongly advised that students attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.
Special Consideration Policy (Late Submission):
All assessment tasks are required to be completed to a satisfactory level. If you are unable to complete any piece of assessment by the due date, you will need to apply for an extension. Please refer to the following URL for extensions and special consideration.
www.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsiderations/online
Cover Sheet for Submissions:
All students must complete a submission cover sheet for every piece of submitted work. This signed sheet acknowledges that you are aware of the plagiarism implications. Please refer to the following URL for further information regarding plagiarism
www.rmit.edu.au/academicintegrity/students
Work not seen in progress:
If a student hands in any work that the teacher has never seen in class or discussed with the student prior to the submission, the teacher can refuse to assess the work on the basis of authentication issues.
