Course Description

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to provide a range of intervention strategies to address alcohol and other drugs (AOD) issues within the scope of an individual’s treatment plan

Performance Criteria:

1.1Obtain information about the intervention from the treatment plan
1.2Determine client availability according to organisation protocols
1.3Determine availability of appropriate space and resources, if required
1.4Plan the intervention, in line with the needs of the person with AOD issues and specifications of the treatment plan

2.1Confirm the person's understanding of the intervention
2.2Obtain informed consent from the person before commencing the intervention
2.3Report any misunderstanding or confusion experienced by the person to a supervisor in a timely manner
2.5Guide the person to complete the participate in the intervention as defined in the treatment plan
2.6Identify and note any difficulties the person experiences completing intervention requirements and report to supervisor in a timely manner
2.7Identify and manage compliance issues, including subjective and objective reporting of the person's response to the intervention, and report to supervisor in a timely manner
2.8Provide feedback to the person to reinforce their understanding of intervention and progress
2.9Seek assistance when the person presents with needs or signs outside limits of own authority, skills and/or knowledge
2.10Report difficulties of the person with AOD issues to supervisor for advice before continuing the planned intervention

Details of Learning Activities

In this course you will be provided with a range of opportunities to enhance and extend your skills, knowledge and attitude in the field of AOD work. Classes are run three days per week. A detailed timetable is also available on the RMIT website. Most classes run for three hours and are facilitated by recognised professionals in the community services sector and RMIT staff. A variety of learning styles are catered for and learning will take place via interactive experiential tasks combined with more didactic theory based exercises. All in-class learning will compliment the practical placement competent of this course where you are required to complete a total of two hundred (200) hours over the course of the year. There will also be two course-related field trips - Arradale psychiatric institution and Dax Collection gallery - scheduled in March. These trips are intended to provide you with important insight into the socio-political and historical context of the community services sector in Victoria.

All courses and learning activities will be supported and complimented by RMIT’s e-learning tool "Blackboard".

Overview of Assessment

There are a variety of tools used to assess this course including two hundred (200) hours of practical placement providing you with opportunities to develop and demonstrate the skills knowledge and attitude required.
Other assessment tasks may involve:

  • Short essays where you will be expected to write an answer to a question in detail, and to draw conclusions about issues.
  • Class presentation where you will be expected to conduct a brief session in class, to lead discussion and to provide information for other students.
  • Participation in class discussions and activities.
  • Reflective Journals you will be expected to provide a written record of your experiences during the year - in class and in practical placement.
  • Blackboard/On-line assessment you will participate in regular on-line forums, blogging and small assessment tasks.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task: Placement Manual

1: Provide examples of interventions which you are aware of and that occurred during your practical placement.

2: Observe and record an intervention which occurred during your placement. Pay particular attention to how the intervention linked in with the client’s Individual Treatment Plan and at what level they were able to participate. Your answer must demonstrate an understanding of how the intervention was planned, implemented and documented.

Length: 400 to 600 words.
