Course Description

This unit is specifically designed to cater for safety aspects of work involving delivery of services in aged care, home and community care and disability services
The unit focuses on maintaining safety of the worker, the people being supported and other community members

Details of Learning Activities

In this course you will be provided with a range of opportunities to enhance and extend your skills, knowledge and attitude in the field of AOD work. Classes are run three days per week. A detailed timetable is also available on the RMIT website. Most classes run for three hours and are facilitated by recognised professionals in the community services sector and RMIT staff. A variety of learning styles are catered for and learning will take place via interactive experiential tasks combined with more didactic theory based exercises. All in-class learning will compliment the practical placement competent of this course where you are required to complete a total of two hundred (200) hours over the course of the year. There will also be two course-related field trips - Arradale psychiatric institution and Dax Collection gallery - scheduled in March. These trips are intended to provide you with important insight into the socio-political and historical context of the community services sector in Victoria.

All courses and learning activities will be supported and complimented by RMIT’s e-learning tool "Blackboard".

Overview of Assessment

This unit forms a major part of the practical placement component of this qualification.  Assessment is undertaken within the practical placement environment.  Students are required to demonstrate their own level of competency during their placement period whcih is then discussed and confirmed with their workplace supervisor and placement coordinator.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment task:  Placement manual

Using one of your practical placements -

1.Provide evidence you undertook an OH&S induction as part of your orientation
2.Describe the induction and comment on the effectiveness of it
3.Provide three examples of environmental, situational or client-related risk and describe the procedures in place to minimise these
4.Choose one of the risks identified in question three and describe the organisation’s reporting process
