Course Description

This unit specifies the workplace performance required by an employee to contribute to OHS processes where there is a responsibility for own work outputs and possibly limited responsibility for the work output of others

Element:

1. Plan and conduct work safely

Performance Criteria:

• Plan work in accordance with relevant provisions of OHS legislation, standards, codes of practice/compliance codes and guidance material
• Identify hazards as part of work planning and work process
• Address identified hazards prior to starting work using judgement within defined scope of responsibilities
• Report residual risk according to organisation procedures
• Report incidents and injuries in line with organisation policies and procedures
• Undertake OHS housekeeping in work area
• Maintain and update own knowledge of OHS issues as they apply to workplace systems, equipment and processes, and
• Manage own levels of stress and fatigue to ensure ability to work safely

2. Support others in working safely

Performance Criteria:

• Share information on safe work practices and work procedures with members of the work group
• Check the OHS practices of less experienced members of the workgroup
• If appropriate provide guidance and coaching to less experienced members of the workgroup to support them in working safely, and
• If appropriate support members of the workgroup to accurately record incidents and complete associated workplace documentation according to organisation procedures.

3. Contribute to OHS participative processes

Performance Criteria:

• Raise OHS issues in accordance with organisation procedures
• Contribute to workplace meetings, workplace inspections or other consultative activities in a constructive manner to improve safety
• Provide assistance to workgroup members to contribute to workplace safety, and
• Apply knowledge of roles and responsibilities of OHS representatives and OHS committees.

4. Contribute to hazard identification, OHS risk assessment and risk control activities

Performance Criteria:

• Report identified hazards and inadequacies in risk controls
• Check the workplace for hazards using itemised checklist(s) in accordance with work procedures
• Contribute to risk assessments
• Provide input to development, and implementation of control measures, with reference to the hierarchy of control.

5. Participate in the control of emergency situations

Performance Criteria:

• Identify emergency signals and alarms and responded to them appropriately
• Take initial action to control/confine emergency according to organisation procedures, and taking account of the nature and scope of the emergency, and
• Implement emergency response procedures within scope of training and competence.

Overview of Assessment

Students may demonstrate competency either by RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning), the completion of work place projects or the completion of assessment activities based on the Australian Career Development Studies Level 2 materials.


Assessment Tasks

Recognition of Prior Learning - students undertaking RPL will need to provide evidence of their competency. Please read the RPL Kit and complete the RPL Ready!  mapping document  as the first stage of the RPL Process. You and your assessor will discuss  your  RPL Ready mapping and suitability for RPL. If you are using RPL as assessment for this competency, you and your assessor  once you have collected your evidence, will  undertake a structured professional conversation about your evidence in order to assess your  competency. 



Workplace project assessment - students are required to provide a written report add/or presentation of your project showing evidence of your engagement with the elements of the competency, underpinning knowledge and use of appropriate skills.



Students undertaking study in this unit of competency are required to complete tasks that include:
•    the completion of  ACDS learning material activities
•    application of knowledge to their workplace
The application of knowledge to their workplace task is negotiated with the student and might include the development of resources for clients, that application of your  knowledge to meet your  client’s needs and  implementing new initiatives in the workplace or your practice, completion of case studies and online research
