Course Description

In this course you will develop skills and knowledge required to explore technologies available to artists working in any digital media. Given the rapid pace of change and technology, one focus of this course is on exploring industry trends whilst maintaining currency.

In this course you will develop skills and knowledge required to;
• Produce digital images to reflect a concept brief
• Understand material and equipment requirements to meet fulfill the brief.

You will develop the ability to;
• Demonstrate the use of tools, equipment and materials to produce digital images.

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the capacity of a digital camera
  • Produce a photographic image that meets the requirements of a brief.
  • Use digital camera functions to capture the required image
  • Capture a digital image using a digital camera and negotiate appropriate printing
  • Assess the capacity of, and operate, a digital camera to upload and process digital images using industry hardware and software to deliver a quality image.

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

  • Fundamental digital art technologies
  • Develop workshop and portfolio skills.


Details of Learning Activities

Your learning activities will take place in a studio and lecture theatre. You will complete exercises and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is on going throughout the semester. You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. Assessment requires completion of a series of projects developing a folio that demonstrates concept development, understanding of materials and adhering to the guidelines of working in a digital studio.

Critical aspects of assessment for this unit include:

  • production of digital images which demonstrate a command of nominated techniques and which reflect the concept;
  • general knowledge of materials and equipment used in digital imaging work;
  • practical demonstration of skills using required tools, equipment and materials to produce multiple digital images.
