Course Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to participate in workplace occupational health and safety (OHS) consultative processes.
Consultative arrangements, also referred to as participative arrangements, inform those involved in OHS matters, seek their input and provide opportunity for stakeholders to participate in decisions that may impact on the OHS of the workplace.

Learning Outcomes
Activities in this course aim to enhance your understanding of the relevant OHS laws, policies and procedures in the workplace, the IT industry and your organisation, and identify the responsibilities of those involved in the OHS consultative process.
You will also learn how to participate in meetings in the workplace where OHS issues are raised.
The Internet will be used as a learning tool and a resource for students to seek and locate relevant information.
Details of Learning Activities
Activities in this course aim to enhance your understanding of the relevant OHS laws, policies and procedures in the workplace, the IT industry and your organisation, and identify the responsibilities of those involved in the OHS consultative process.
Using an assignment, and a variety of case studies, class practices and tasks and classroom discussion, as well as work-based observation, experiences and activities you will develop an understanding of the relevant OHS laws for the IT Industry and your organisation. You will be encouraged to raise and discuss OHS issues in the workplace.
The Internet and YouTube videos will be used as a learning tool and a resource for students to seek and locate relevant information.
Learning activities may be modified during the semester to meet the needs of students in the current program and the needs of their workplace.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment will consist of a range of class and work-based activities and an assignment.
You must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.
Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, workplace activities, in class exercises, quizzes, practical problem solving exercises and presentations. You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
Assessment Tasks
A range of assessment methods will be used to assess your understanding of relevant OHS laws and procedures, practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:
- analysis of responses to case studies and scenarios
- demonstration of the application of OHS legislation when consulting with people in the workplace on OHS issues
- direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
- oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of roles and responsibilities of OHS personnel
- review of records of meeting where OHS issues were raised and discussed
- evaluation of communication with others about outcomes of OHS issues raised
- class assignment and/or tasks

Access to an internet connected computer outside of class times – Internet connected computers are available in the School of Life & Physical Scienceslabs on levels 4, 6 or 8 of building 51, 81 Victoria Street, Melbourne.
