Course Description
This unit defines the competency required to Determine and confirm client business expectations as prescribed in the ICA11 Information and Communications Training Package.
When you undertake this unit you will develop the ability to gather, identify and record client business requirements, and to verify that the information is accurate, relevant and complete.
The outcome of the unit is for you to be able to gather information to determine business system requirements to meet a client’s expectations and needs.

Learning Outcomes
Activities in this course aim to develop your communication skills in negotiating with clients and stakeholders and to introduce you to project management skills and tasks. You will work as part of a team to ascertain the needs and expectations of a client in developing a project.
The activities aim to enhance your understanding and knowledge in determining and clarifying business problems, their scope and the means of gathering information about the cause of the problem and the possible solution to that problem.
Through class and work-based observation, activities and assignment you will:
- Learn how to ascertain and clarify what a client’s needs or problems are
- Learn how to gather information from a client and various sources
- Develop solutions for the identified problem or need
- Gather information to establish the system requirements and problems
- Confirm and document system specifications for client approval
Details of Learning Activities
Activities in this course are aimed at enabling you to understand the method of determining a business problem, develop some skills in gathering information and to document and confirm the business needs with your client.
You will work through an Integrated Assignment - Sporting Precinct which will involve other courses in the Certificate IV Information Technology Networking program. In this Integrated Assignment you will be presented with a networking business problem where you and your colleagues, in a group, will be required to ascertain the requirements of the business clients from a business case study and through gathering relevant information about the problem presented to you. You will be required to develop a network according to the specification set out in the Integrated Assignment and task requirements specified in class and on Blackboard. There will be a range of class activities and exercises which you will be required to complete for each of the courses in the Integrated Assignment - Sporting Precinct.
For this course you will be required to develop:
- a business case for the problem where you will ascertain and clarify what a client’s needs or problems are
- gather information from a client and various sources to scope the project
- clarify the system requirements and problems
- develop solutions for the identified problem or need
- present documentation for client approval
- submit final documentation for sign-off
As part of this course you will also complete a short online course on Managing Small Projects from the website Lynda.com. On completion of this short course you will receive a certificate, a copy of which you will be required to submit.
You should retain a copy of the certificate for your Resume or CV.
The Internet and YouTube videos will be used as a learning tool and a resource for you to seek and locate relevant information.
Learning activities may be modified during the semester to meet the needs of your current program and, in the case of trainees, the needs of their workplace.
Activities may be modified in light of the materials and presentations in the related courses and any modifications made to these courses.

Weekly program shown above does not necessarily relate to consecutive weeks. Teaching and assessment will continue on an ad hoc basis throughout the semester, based on student and group needs.
Delivery of program will also depend on delivery of other courses in the Integrated Assignment. In 2015-16, the Integrated Assignment - Sporting Precinct will commence in week 8 of Semester 2, 2015 and its delivery will continue until the end of semester 1, 2016 with both the Integrated Assignment and the Integrated Project - Airport. Structural timetable differences occur due to administrative issues.
The course will be delivered in relation to student needs and, in the case of trainees, practices in their workplace.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment in this course is competency based. You must be competent in all elements to successfully complete the course.
Your assessment will involve a range of activities and an integrated assignment which will include a number of courses within the Certificate IV Information Technology Networking program.
The assessment will involve both in-class and group-based elements. It will also involve observation of your understanding, knowledge and practice of the elements in both the theoretical and practical environment.
You will work in a team on a range of activities leading to the production of an integrated assignment and an integrated project. The major part of your assessment will be in these integrated tasks.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment in this course is competency based assessment. You must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.
This course will be part of two clusters of courses involving an Integrated Assignment and an Integrated Project.
The Integrated Assignment – Sporting Precinct will involve a cluster of five (5) courses, viz.:
- ICAICT401A Determine and confirm client business requirements
- ICAPMG401A Support small scale IT projects
- ICTTEN4198A Install, configure and test an internet protocol network
- ICTTEN4199A Install, configure and test a router
- ICANWK404A Install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network
The Integrated Project – Airport will form part of the learning and training for the courses within a cluster of six (6) courses, viz.:
- ICAICT401A Determine and confirm client business requirements
- ICANWK404A Install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network
- ICAPMG401A Support small scale IT projects
- ICCTEN5200A Install, configure and test a local area network switch
- ICANWK403A Manage network and date integrity
- ICANWK406A Install, configure and test network security
The primary assessment task will be an Integrated Assignment - Sporting Precinct which will involve other courses in the Certificate IV Information Technology Networking program. You will be assessed separately in those other courses, while some components and topics assessed in this course will be relevant to assessment in those other courses as well.
In this course you will be required to submit the following as part of the Integrated Assignment:
- Business Case
- Assets List
- Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
- Invoice
- Scope Document
- Project Tender - This will be a report incorporating the above documents for sign-off

Other Information
Access to an internet connected computer outside of class times – Internet connected computers are available in the School of Vocational Health and Sciences labs on levels 4, 6 or 8 of building 51, 81 Victoria Street, Melbourne.
Further lab access can be found in the student lab on level 3 (ground floor) of Building 8, in Swanston Street, Melbourne; as well as RMIT Libraries.

Late work
Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension will not be corrected.
Extension of Time for submission of assessable work
A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original date. They must lodge the application form (available on the web: http://www1.rmit.edu.au/students/assessment/extension) at least the day before the due date. The application is lodged with the School Admin Office on Level 6, Building 51. Students requiring longer extensions must apply for Special consideration.

For missed assessments such as exams and tests, you (and your doctor, if you are ill) must fill out a special consideration form. This form must be lodged at the HUB or online with supporting evidence (e.g. medical certificate) prior to, or within 48 hours of the scheduled time of the exam or test.
If you miss an assessment task due to unavoidable circumstances you need to follow the procedure of special consideration and apply within the allowed time frame.
