Course Description

This course covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to explore and creatively apply the design process to the development of 2 dimensional (2D) forms.

National Codes, Titles, Elements and Performance Criteria

National Element Code & Title:

BSBDES302A Explore and apply the creative design process to 2D forms

Element:

1. Source information on 2-dimensional design

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Identify and access relevant sources of information on 2D design 1.2 Evaluate and collate information to build knowledge of 2D design

Element:

2. Explore the creative design process for 2-dimensional forms

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Investigate and reflect on how a particular concept or idea might be communicated in 2D 3.2 Select materials, tools and equipment relevant to the realisation of the concept or idea 3.3 Apply a creative design process to produce a range of 2D concept realisations 3.4 Reflect on own application of design process and success in communicating the concept or idea 3.5 Seek and obtain feedback from others about the 2D form and its success in communicating the concept or idea 3.6 Present and store concept realisations or samples in a format which takes account of the need for professional presentation and the work's potential value for future jobs

Element:

3. Communicate concepts or ideas through application of design processes to 2-dimensional forms

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Use creative thinking techniques to generate a range of ideas and options 2.2 Use experimentation to explore and challenge a range of different ideas 2.3 Challenge assumptions, reflect on ideas and refine approaches 2.4 Consciously change perspective, and evaluate ideas and situations in new ways

Learning Outcomes

This course applies to individuals who apply the creative design process to the development of 2-dimensional forms. On successful completion of this course, you will have completed workshops and projects that will contribute to a portfolio of evidence.

Details of Learning Activities

Your learning activities will take place in a studio and lecture theatre. You will complete exercises and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. Learning resources include access to studios and computer laboratories and relevant software. You will be expected to make use of the library resources.

In this course, you learn through:
1. In-class activities:
• Teacher directed group activities/projects
• Class exercises to review discussions/lectures
• Group discussion
• Studio work

2. Out-of-class activities include:
• Practical exercises
• Preparing for discussion
• Project work
• Independent research

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is on going throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through completion of a body of work that demonstrates concept development, understanding of materials and adhering to the guidelines of working in a studio.
Production of a range of projects or concept realisations which show the creative application of processes to 2-dimensional forms

Assessment Tasks

Project Brief 1: Exploring 2D elements and principles

Visual diary Task

3 x collages

Project Brief 2: Self and environment

In class exercise

6 collage concertina booklet

3. Visual Diary complete with tasks and relevant research.

Assessment Matrix
