Course Description

In this course you will cover the skills and knowledge required to use techniques for image processing. It is a specialisation unit and refers to specific equipment and techniques used for making photo work-print images.

Current photoimaging industry practice relies increasingly on digital imaging processes and this is reflected in the training and assessment of this unit.

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to produce a folio of printed work to a high standard consistent with industry practice. The production of this folio will incorporate the development of proof sheets, digital files and work prints which demonstrate the application of selected and core techniques.

RMIT has a range of equipment available for students to use to complete their assignments including access to RMIT labs with computers, server storage space and required software to complete exercises and assignments. Many students prefer to also have their own personal computer with current Photoshop, Acrobat, Bridge and editing software as well as personal data storage devices (generally a minimum of two)


Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks include:

  • reviews and feedback sessions
  • demonstration and various applications of imaging processing techniques
  • produce proof sheets and work within a structured workflow process
  • output digital files to produce prints using a variety of output mediums chromogenic and inkjet.


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Assessment tasks are either ungraded or graded. Results for graded assessment tasks are equally weighted and averaged to provide your final grade.


You must submit all pieces of assessment in order for your competency to be assessed in this course.

SEMESTER 1 UNGRADED ASSESSMENT TASKS

    Assessment task 2 – High Key Proof sheets
    Produce a digital work in progress file of shortlisted images for feedback and evaluation
    Due - week 9, starting 13 April.

    Assessment task 3 – Low Key Proof sheets
    Produce a digital work in progress file of shortlisted images for feedback and evaluation
    Due - week 12, starting 4 May.

    Assessment task 4 - High and Low key Photoshop files
    Psd digital files for folio submission
    Due – week 14, starting 18 May.

     

    SEMESTER 1 GRADED ASSESSMENT

    Assessment task 5 - High and Low Key Prints -
    Produce two folio prints - 1 high key and 1 low key image each. The folio must contain both digital files as well as final pigmented inkjet prints. The files and the prints must contain the full range of tones with no clipping to demonstrate appropriate application of processing, enhancement and output techniques
    Due – Week 15, starting 25 May. (pigmented inkjet prints)


    SEMESTER 2 - UNGRADED ASSESSMENT

    Produce three B&W treatments of the one source file provided

    Provide digital layered psd files of both B&W portraits 1&2 along with test prints ready for final printing

    Assessment Item 5 - Proof sheets for the Digital Split Tone Folio work
    Produce a digital work in progress file of shortlisted images for feedback and evaluation
    Due - week 12, starting 5 October.

    Assessment Item 6 - Digital Photoshop folio files for the Split Tone
    Produce a digital work in progress file of shortlisted images for feedback and evaluation
    Due - week 14, starting 19 October.

    SEMESTER 2 GRADED ASSESSMENT

    Assessment Item 7 - Folio – 4 final prints
    Produce a Black & White folio of four prints from the images you have developed over the semester, comprising of 2 portraits, 1 toned landscape and 1 of personal choice (using an alternative process technique). The folio must contain both digital files as well as final pigmented inkjet prints. The files and the prints must be black and white contain the full range of tones with no clipping to demonstrate appropriate application of processing, enhancement and output techniques
    Due – Week 15, starting 26 October.
