Course Description

This course describes the knowledge of edging and fitting of spectacle lenses and specialised techniques, treatments and processes to finish and/or repair spectacle frames and lenses.
It includes skills in dispensing the best form lenses and ordering from laboratories.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Determine any axis or centring error and apply Australian Standards tolerances.
2.2 Check the spectacles on the focimeter to identify and verify powers, axes and centration
2.3 Check lens surface for scratching and aberrations
2.4 Adjust the frame to standard alignment
2.5 Check metal framed spectacles for strain
2.6 Clean spectacles
2.7 Clean equipment and attachments in accordance with manufacturer's requirements and infection control procedures
2.8 Undertake regular maintenance procedures on equipment in accordance with manufacturer's requirements and infection control procedures
2.9 Store equipment and attachments in accordance with manufacturer's requirements and organisation policies and procedures

3.1 Place orders for the edging of spectacle lenses
3.2 Order lenses fitted to both plastic and metal frames
3.3 Order special hand-edging to modify lenses for change-overs and centring corrections
3.4 Order lenses to be edged, grooved and mounted to nyl-tag frames
3.5 Order lenses to be edged, drilled and mounted to rimless frames
3.6 Order tinted lenses to required standards

4.1 Repair and modify spectacle frames

5.2 Adjust workspace, furniture and equipment to suit the ergonomic requirements of the user
5.3 Use technology according to organisation requirements and in a way which promotes a safe work environment
5.4 Carry out or arrange routine maintenance in order to ensure that equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and organisation requirements
5.5 Identify equipment faults and take action in accordance with manufacturer's instructions or by reporting fault to designated person

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may consist of examinations, quizzes, practical demonstration, work based assessment or simulation, assignments and submission of your learning and assessment guide (workplace evidence portfolio).


Assessment Tasks

Before attempting any of the assessment tasks below, ensure that you agree with all self-assessment checklists in the learner guide and that you have completed the online self-assessment quiz.

1. Complete the online test titled HLTOPD407C. This test consists of completing a series of 10 online questions. These questions may consist of true or false, multiple choice or short answer questions. In order to pass you need to correctly answer seven or more questions (7 out of 10). You must complete this quiz by the end of week 2.

2. Refer to your learning and assessment guide (LAG) and carefully read and complete items 3, 5, 6 & 7. An RMIT University assessor will assess you on these items during a work-based visit and during your compulsory attendance at blocks in year one. In addition your assessor will include a range of verbal questions to ask during these visits. An RMIT University assessor will talk to your employer to discuss your progress and development of workplace skills.

3. At the end of Cluster 2 you will be required to complete a 90 minute closed book examination which will consist of short answer questions, multiple choice, and labelling of diagrams. Please note that this examination will cover HLTOPD405C, HLTOPD407C, HLTCOM405D, HLTCOM301C and BSBCUS301B. The pass mark is 70%.

4. During your attendance at Cluster 2 and Cluster 3A you will be required to successfully complete a range of repair tasks including frame servicing, soldering, sink joints, screw replacement and rivet repairs.

The Cluster 2 assessment due dates for your group will be given to you during your Cluster 2 attendance and posted on Blackboard.

Please note that you will need to demonstrate competency in all 4 of these assessment tasks in order to achieve competency for this unit.
