This course is delivered and assessed in conjunction GRAP5337 Graphic design techniques and VART6279 Realise a creative project.

Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to use typography techniques in design work. It includes a general knowledge of typography and its application to different design briefs.

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take place in a studio, workshop or classroom using industry standard tools and resources.
You will complete exercises and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills and will include tasks and projects.

Assessment tasks are:
Type project 1A - Magazine 50%
Type project 2A - Music event branding 50%

An assessment charter summarises your responsibilities as an RMIT student as well as those of your teachers.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment activities in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment outcomes. Summative assessment projects in this unit are graded.

To demonstrate competency in this course you need to engage in the assessment activities to a competent standard.
Assessment tasks:
2 x tasks (formative)
Task 1: The generation of a typographic design that conveys a message through an expresssive & interpretive visual solution. Due in Week 4.
Task 2: The production of a low relief/pop-up pattern based design using a single letterform. Due in Week 8.

1 x project (summative)
Project 1: The creation of an original font design made from selected objects and paraphernalia, and applied to a 3D typographic outcome that may be used for a variety of purposes . Due in Week 15.
 
You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within class time. The submitted work will be assessed with written feedback as well as a quality indicator that relates to separate components of each brief and the overall outcome.

At the completion of the course, grading will be offered in addition to, and after, competency based assessment.
