This course is delivered and assessed in conjunction GRAP5337 Graphic design techniques and VART6279 Realise a creative project.

Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to use typography techniques in design work. It includes a general knowledge of typography and its application to different design briefs.

1.1 With reference to briefing documentation, clarify design requirements for typographic work in consultation with relevant personnel 1.2 Source reference material on typography pertinent to the brief 1.3 Confirm equipment, materials and work space requirements 1.4 Take account of the requirements for different publication processes when planning work 1.5 Set up work space and equipment with due regard to safety considerations and organisational procedures

2.1 Identify possible approaches to typography design and establish criteria for the selection of a final approach 2.2 Select appropriate materials, tools and equipment for the testing of approaches and techniques 2.3 Trial typography techniques that may meet the requirements of the brief 2.4 Evaluate trialling against criteria and select the preferred design approach

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take place in a studio, workshop or classroom using industry standard tools and resources. You will complete exercises
and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

  • typographic/graphic design exercises
  • peer teaching and class presentations
  • group discussion and/or activities
  • teacher directed activities/projects
  • ‘workshopping’ of student projects

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills and will include tasks and projects.

Assessment tasks are:
Type project 1A - Magazine 50%
Type project 2A - Music event branding 50%

Assessment Tasks

Assessment activities in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment outcomes. Summative project/s in this unit are given a qualitative assessment. To demonstrate competency in this course you need to engage in the assessment activities and complete them to a competent standard, or show equivalent evidence.
