Course Description

In this course you will explore and experiment with techniques used to create video art. This involves developing the skills and knowledge required to use video equipment proficiently and to extend the medium creatively.

Details of Learning Activities

This Course is combined. It comprises, EMPL5960C - BSBCRT301A Develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills, and, VART6280C - CUVDIG402A Experiment with techniques to produce video art. Each course guide contains the same timeline to reflect the combination of tasks and projects.

Learning activities will take place in a studio, workshop or classroom using industry standard tools and resources. You will complete exercises and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

Video Production Equipment.


We supply some camera and other production equipment at the Brunswick Campus. This is used in-session but can also be loaned for non-session scheduled times. Video & SLR cameras are conditionally available for overnight loan. Other equipment is available for supervised usage or by special arrangement on individual basis.
RMIT University also had an Audio Visual equipment collection available for student loans in Building 8 of the Swanston Campus.
Studewnts are also encouraged to use their own equipment, with the proviso that transfer of media is possible via their own supplied cables or other transfer media.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment is on-going throughout the course. Assessment will incorporate a range of methods to assess performance and the application of knowledge and skills. The assessment tasks are:
1. Video production project - process 50%
2. Video production project - final 50%

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
You will receive feedback with verbal and/or written evaluation of your progress within class time. The submitted projects will be assessed with written feedback as well as a quality indicator that relates to separate components of the project and the overall outcome.
To demonstrate competency in this course you need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.
Formative assessment tasks: Collected practice tasks (Due week 3, 7, 12, & 19)
Summative assessment task 1: 6 second movie (Due week 2 & 3)
Summative assessment task 2: Event Map (Due week 7)
Summative assessment task 3: Animation or Prop based Video (Due week 12)
Summative assessment task 4: 3D Idea Forms (Due week 16)

At the completion of the course, grading will be offered in addition to, and after, competency based assessment.
